CAMPAIGN 2004
Buffalo Soldiers roam S.C. trail for Clark
By JENNIFER TALHELM
Staff Writer

They wear black cowboy hats and trench coats, and when they strolled into Wesley Clark’s S.C. campaign headquarters recently, workers said it was like the cavalry had arrived.

Three Buffalo Soldiers began working for Clark’s S.C. campaign last month, and two more are expected soon.

Named for the band of black U.S. soldiers who fought the Indians in the 1870s, these soldiers are black politicos with close ties to former President Bill Clinton. And they’re fighting to help Clark win South Carolina’s Feb. 3 Democratic presidential primary

3. Great!
It's always good to have more feets on the streets, especially on the crucial S.C. streets.

Wes Clark. He will make an extraordinary American President.

5. interesting quote
<<<While talking about Clark, Michael McCray, 35, a Buffalo Soldier from Arkansas, said: “We’re just glad President Clinton asked us to work for the right guy.”

But Talmadge quickly added that Willis is the one who calls them. “If I got a call from Clinton, I’d tape the call,” he said, adding later, “I can’t say Bill Clinton asked us to come down and do this.”>>

Go Wes and thanks for loaning your guys Bill. :)

6. Great!
This is great.

I'm curious. At several fairs I've gone to Buffalo Soldiers have re-enacted the original camps. I think they are there to show that African Americans have fought for this country for a long time. Anyway, I chatted with them and learned about early camp life, the horses, whatever. Do you think these men I met are connected to these men. They also called themselves Buffalo Soldiers.

8. Yes, there's definitely a connection.
I think the modern Buffalo Soldiers are mostly veterans/re-enactors who work to keep the legend of the 1800s Buffalo Soldiers alive.

There are way too many folks who don't know that significant percentage of Western settlers/cowboys/soldiers were Black.

& BTW, the original Buffalo Soldiers were called that by the Indians, because of their color (duh) and the texture of their hair.

Damn, I just love this: first the General gets the important Indian endorsement, and now some Buffalo Soldiers. As a Westerner and a hardcore Romantic, this delights my soul.

I was already an enthusiastic supporter, but when he said (in some speech or other) that he wanted to restore the buffalo to the Great Plains, this 1/8 Comanche damn near lost it. I still tear up everytime I think about it.
