I called the pastor who has the false sign up about Obama, and now I have a crank caller on the line
I left a polite but clear message with the secretary, Abby. Minutes later my phone rang, no one spoke, I sat there waiting for a few minutes and went to call the phone company on my handheld. There's a six minute wait for customer service.

I can't post comments on Kos, as there's a week wait. (Never needed to say anything before!)

I can hear the clack clack clack of high heels every now and again in the background. This is the first crank caller I've had in at least 10 years, this is a nonpublished line, and I wondered if any DU'ers had some practical advice on how to make him go away. He is still connected.

Creeeepy!

1. Get a loud whistle -- after a while, blow it into the phone as hard as you can

23. I did this recently... but with a trumpet
I had some kids crank-calling me about my side business (magician/balloon twister) at 3 in the morning asking me why I'm so "amazing." My stage name is the Amazing Christopher. I thought it had stopped until about 3 weeks ago when they called me in the afternoon. Here's the gist of the conversation...

Teen: Why are you so amazing?
Me (getting up from my desk to go to the bedroom): I'm so amazing because I can (soft voice) mumble mumble mumble.
Teen: What?
Me (opening up trumpet case): I'm so amazing because I can (soft voice) rhubarb rhubarb rhubarb
Teen (louder): What?
Me (trumpet is ready/normal voice): I'm amazing because I played trumpet in high school.
Teen: What?
Me: 20 second blast of high g next to the phone.

I haven't heard from them since.

3. He is on the line, but you hear high-heels, you might have crank callerS
Or you may have a crank caller with a shoe-fetish.

Either way the link between your call to a PASTOR and shoe-fetish is the funniest image to cross my mind today!!!! Thanks for the laugh.

5. Truly creepy. But you could have fun with it.
Shout whatever you like into the receiver.

"What? No, you cannot touch my breasts! I cannot believe a "man of God" would suggest such a thing!"

The best way to deal with stalkers/prank callers, etc. is to confront them.

6. Might be an accidental cell call
The fact that you can hear heels clicking wouldn't seem to mesh with a crank call.

9. Was going to say the same thing. I've gotten a couple of these;
including a rather long recording on my answering machine of some guy in the middle of an appointment with a doctor, or so it sounded.

11. Possible, but highly unlikely since I've never gotten one before.
I think the heels are Abby in the other room, but I don't know. It just creeps me out. It's kind of threatening.

The man put a sign up that said "America! We have a Muslim President, this is a sin against the Lord!"

I called and pointed out that this is false, and within minutes I have a silent caller who won't get off the line. YUCK.

Be glad they didn't call you from the bathroom...my husband has accidentally dialled from the men's room more than once. Ewwww.

24. Best accidental cell call ever
A woman was fooling around with a guy who wasn't her boyfriend. In the heat of passion, she knocked her cell phone off the nightstand. It accidentally redialed and called her boyfriend who got to listen to the whole episode. Needless to say, he wasn't that thrilled.

20. The problem with that is, why would her number be stored in his cell?
That's how you get those accidental cell calls.

But she called the number listed on the sign, which I would *assume* goes to a landline at the church. Unless, of course, the church operates out of the guy's basement, which is always a possibility, lol.

21. Accidental cell call story: My mom called my house phone late one night crying...
My soon-to-be ex-wife and I had just had a FURIOUS shouting match. I was outside cooling off when my wife brought me the cordless. My mom was bawling like a baby wondering why we treated each other so badly. I asked her what she was talking about and she said she had heard every word. If we needed money, all we had to do was ask.

My cell phone was in the inside breast pocket of the jacket that I casually tossed on the bench inside the front door. When I took it off as I got home after teaching a class that lasted until 9:45p.m., I somehow pressed the redial button. My mom's house was the last call I had made earlier that day. The phone dialed; she answered as we were arguing.

Funniest part: When my wife answered the house phone, her first instinct (as always) was to tell my mom she didn't know what the hell she was talking about and it wouldn't be any of her business anyway. When I pulled the cell phone out of the jacket, we looked at each other guiltily, then started smiling, then laughing our asses off. Then we broke out a bottle of wine and had some fantastic makeup sex.

I don't get the opportunity to tell that story very often and couldn't help myself.

18. Another trick you can try
Edited on Mon Nov-17-08 04:10 PM by nichomachus
is you make a few clicks on the phone -- and then say "Hello, officer, this is the caller I was complaining about."

Sometimes, it works.

Also, years ago, my sister had a similar problem. The phone company gave her a special code to dial in and it alerted them and traced the number of the caller. I don't know if they still do that.

22. I emailed the Church
@ abbym@spiritonecc.org

My note:

I am not the Christian you profess to be. I wonder how you can espouse such nonsense about President Elect Barack Hussein Obama and call yourself a Christian. And the sad part is you are spouting this hate to your congregation. Shame, shame, shame.

And please do not give out my name & address for harassment by your minions. I've got yours, too.

27. Hang un, then punch * 69 - the number of the last call will be displayed
You can also call the phone company and give them the number telling them you received a harrassing call. It is illegal.
