Obama wants Iraq War Waffle Room.
Edited on Tue Nov-18-08 08:18 PM by Pryderi
Obama doesn't want to leave Iraq. At least not as fast as he had promised during the election. Getting Hillary as SOS accomplishes 2 things.

1. Hillary can talk about "facts on the ground" and has 17 million voters to support Obama by proxy.

2. Hillary and Bill will be "inside the tent pissing out"

Kroft: There are a number of different things that you could do early pertaining to executive orders. One of them is to shutdown Guantanamo Bay. Another is to change interrogation methods that are used by U.S. troops. Are those things that you plan to take early action on?

Mr. Obama: Yes. I have said repeatedly that I intend to close Guantanamo, and I will follow through on that. I have said repeatedly that America doesn't torture. And I'm gonna make sure that we don't torture. Those are part and parcel of an effort to regain America's moral stature in the world.

(CBS) Kroft: Can you give us some sense of when you might start redeployments out of Iraq?

Mr. Obama: Well, I've said during the campaign, and I've stuck to this commitment, that as soon as I take office, I will call in the Joint Chiefs of Staff, my national security apparatus, and we will start executing a plan that draws down our troops. Particularly in light of the problems that we're having in Afghanistan, which has continued to worsen. We've got to shore up those efforts.

24. Having Hillary and Gates as part of "my national security apparatus"
can give him alot of wiggle room from what he promised on the campaign trail which was;
"Ending the War Responsibly
Barack Obama will work with military commanders on the ground in Iraq and in consultation with the Iraqi government to end the war safely and responsibly within 16 months."

37. Bush and Maliki just signed an agreement we would be out in three years
That's a good timeline to get the troops out safely and carefully... Obama will use that timeline as a template.

Plus, despite what anyone is inferring, Hillary Clinton WILL NOT be Secretary of State. After the vetting process gets too complicated, she will gracefully decline and it will be either Kerry or Richardson.

So, if almost all of the US combat forces in Iraq aren't out by the end of June 2010, you can come back here and do a big "I told you so" dance.

Until then....

50. An interesting concept, certainly. But he's definitely leaving.
I have no doubt about that. Essential to repairing the US' reputation. Get out of there where you wasted billions on incompetent privatized military services that botched the rebuilding of Iraq, and let those brilliant Iraqis get on with rebuilding their own country.
And I heard about some 2011 timetable which surprised me.

But withdrawal will begin at least by March 09. The process will begin.

The 2011 may mean that considering the tons of traces we have left in Iraq in terms of bases and other facilities, we will be almost fully gone by then.

That sounds fine.

Begin withdrawal by 3/09 and be nearly totally gone by 2011. Sounds doable.

So having Ms. HRC on the team would be fine. Still there yet still withdrawing. Tactfully. Strategically.

And she wants to build her foreign policy creds. War profiteering Bushie ways are old hat. New generation in power understands the need for more sustainable foreign policy. Wars are too toxic and environmentally unsustainable.

Friendly seduction is the way to go in the future. Friendly seduction that serves all sides. Sharing conservation technology stretches remaining resources for all to share.

Those sorts of pragmatic politics can be shared across ideological lines.
