We are having ham for Thanksgiving.
My wife said no to turkey. I won't tell her how they slaughter pigs, because if she knew how that happened, I would never eat meat again.

3. We are, too! We bought our ham a few days ago, before the
Palin performance. We bought a lot of stuff for the holiday gorges at a local market, so we get a free turkey to put in the freezer for Christmas. We might get another free turkey at Christmas to freeze for later.

Ham,yams, rice pudding, asparagus, peach, apple and pumpkin pies.....
Nap time.

No drumsticks, though...
But no bones, either.
We got a 9 pound boneless tavern ham, will bake it with pineapples and cherries.

For bean making.

25. We usually have one in the freezer
for ham and bean soup.

Also, there is a great old PA thing, ham and string beans.
Put about 3 pounds of fresh string beans in a large pot, add ham pieces from the leftovers, a small sliced onion 2 or 3 cut up potatos. Pour in 1/4 cup of water, and cover. Heat till it steams, reduce heat to steam it all for maybe 1 1/2 hours, till everything is tender. This is one of the best simple things you can cook, and it tastes and smells better than you can imagine. Simple is better.

A lot of squeamish people would not eat meat again if they did.

22. Really?

"The Tofurky Roast is a pre-cooked vegetarian feast designed to be the delicious centerpiece of your holiday or everyday meal. Made from a revolutionary tofu-wheat protein blend, a Tofurky Roast is known for its incredible, turkey-like texture and flavor."

While I think the "turkey-like" flavor is going a bit far, the texture is nothing at all like a block of tofu, more like a typical grain meat like seitan. I think they're delicious and the sides that come with it are awesome. Everyone's got an opinion though.

14. You're right about never having meat again.
I grew up on a farm and I know how Babe is "prepared." I'm talking about "the neighbors get together and all help out" kind of thing.
Sort of like a barnraising. I know that nothing goes to waste.
That said, I think Palin is a psychopath, a sociopath, into S&M or something. That isn't funny even if you are trying to gross people out.
She was getting her jollies I'll bet.
She probably changed colleges so many times because pets kept coming up missing near her.

19. I grew up around it, and I have cleaned my own deer.
It does not bother me. But yes, alot of people would never eat again if they saw it happen.

And Sarah Palin is not a good person all the way around.

...that's why I don't eat pork anymore. In fact, that's why I gave up meat altogether.

I permanently "pardoned" my turkey...

I started being creeped out by the cattle that bolted on their way to being dispatched. And then I inadvertently caught a few seconds of a slaughterhouse video before I could find the red X. That did it for me.

The disconnect between what you buy under plastic in a meat market and how it got there has been probably the most brilliant marketing of America's factory farming industry.

I am very happy that Prop. 2 passed in California. It's a start. Americans need to eat less meat for their own welfare as well as the environment.

I don't begrudge your turkey dinner. Enjoy. :hi:

Edited on Fri Nov-21-08 03:23 PM by AtomicKitten
But I'm giving it a whirl with:

tzatziki and pita bread (spellcheck says "testicles" for tzatziki!)
spanikopita (spinach, feta cheese, pyllo)
dolma
moussaka
Greek potatoes (roasted with lemon and garlic)
chopped salad
pumpkin bread pudding (tis the season)

* and it doesn't go with my general Greek theme but gotsa have Margaritas (I have a gag-reflex aversion to licorice so no Ouzo for me!)

And I agree with your hatred of Ouzo. I just can't take the licorice flavor.

23. Lots of people don't have turkey- I have had
at various Thanksgivings, pork chops, salmon, ham, and when I was a vegetarian, a buch of veggies.
When with my family, who are very traditional, it's turkey.

24. I'm having a quorn roast.
I've never had it before, so I thought I'd give it a shot. This is my third vegetarian Thanksgiving, and it seems I'm still working out the kinks. I don't miss turkey, but omg, do I miss ham.

I didn't see the palin press conference, but I've read the description, and ugh. I really hope she sinks back into obscurity soon. She's a freaking nutjob, she has absolutely no sense.

31. Why Give Sarah Palin This Much Power Over Your Life?

I'm buying the biggest freaking turkey I can find, and my family and I are going to enjoy it. After all, we have a lot to be thankful for: little Ms. Moosilini is returning to well-deserved obscurity---and if she ever makes another try at public office, that deranged turkey slaughter footage will be ready and waiting. Rejoice, and pass me a drumstick.....
