At least we have lots of nice swamp here. :)

Used to go climbing in Utah fairly frequently. You have to admit ... there is some stunning scenery out there. But after a couple of weeks I find myself longing for the dense foliage of my home state.

Still, living here has its really sucky moments.

Edited on Wed Dec-03-08 10:03 AM by Dawgs
55%(R) to 45%(D) is not much worse than blue state like Pennsylvania.

Look at it this way. Out of a hundred people in Georgia (according to Nov. 5 election), 47 are Dems and 52 are Republicans. In Pennsylvania, 44 are Republicans and 56 are Democrats.

Or, in Pennsylvania, there are 9 more Democrats per 100 people than in Georgia.

4. Exactly, Georgia has some of the least transparent elections in the nation
Edited on Tue Dec-02-08 09:50 PM by MN Against Bush
They use Diebold machines with no paper trail and a recent history of the Republican candidate doing way better than the polls suggest they will. In this race Chambliss was considered a narrow favorite, but he won with an improbable landslide. With no paper trail and Georgia's history of shady elections I find it very hard to believe Chambliss won by the margin we are seeing.

24. Actually NOT...
the problem was a lack of follow through to get the same people to come out and vote in the run off.

Obama failed to show in Georgia so there wasn't a lot of motivation to those who came out to vote for him to come out and vote for Martin.

29. Demographics in Georgia are actually moving slowly in our direction
I must empathize the word 'slowly' however.

The place is becoming more urban/suburban, and democrats do better in those areas then in the rural areas.

I think the Atlanta city suburbs in particular are growing, and we all know what the DC suburbs did to Virginia for us.

39. I agree.
Looking at counties like Gwinnet -- things are turning. We came VERY close in the General election... we did NOT get people out to vote for the runoff. it's a damn shame.

Isaakson is said to be leaning towards a run for Governor, so we could take a seat in a few years.

Saxby is a neutered Neo-Con right now. I look forward to him having to change his form letters from the basic "I agree with George Bush, thank you for your support" . This WILL be his last term...I have no questions about that.

53. No, there are signs of hope in GA. First off, Cobb and Gwinnett County
graduated to swing counties in 2008. That is remarkable. We are talking Newt Gingrich's old district. IF those two counties flip some day in the future due to demographic changes AND we get stellar AA turnout, we are talking a purple state.

I mean, Kerry lost GA by nearly 17 points in '04. Obama lost by 5.5 points. That is not an Alabama result.

10. Yes, Chambliss is an asshole to the nth degree but it doesn't make a huge difference..
..in the big picture. Martin likely would've been a conservative Democrat who would vote w/ Republicans a lot because he comes from a conservative state. Symbolically it would've been nice and brought us closer to 60 but its unlikely he would've been a strong liberal ally in the end.

54. I highly disagree. There was a non-partisan argument against Chambliss:
He is corrupt. If you have followed the Imperial Sugar story, you would know that even Chambliss's colleague Sen. Isaakson was taken aback by what Chambliss did, and disagreed with him.

Chambliss does not serve his constituents: liberal, conservative or otherwise. He serves large corporations who give him fistfuls of money. For that, I am dismayed that he was re-elected.

Granted, if Martin and Franken had won, and we had fallen one vote short of 60 because we'd driven Joementum to the Republicans, that would also have been a dumb move. But it's a shame the decision had to be made before all the results were known.

35. Georgia might swing in our direction in 8 years
Depends if demographics continue to shift and more people move into the state and a succesful Obama Presidency

That being said democrats who vote only once every 4 years were less inclined to show up at the polls because they already one. GOP were more likely to vote because they felt like they lost.

2010 is going to be tough, even if Obama is doing well. Big reason complacency. Most Presidents no matter how popular lose seats in the follow-up election. The GOP gained seats by scaring the shit out of the country in 2002 and that is one of the few exceptions I know of.

59. I agree with your second point but not your first
We had a very charismatic candidate in the primaries in Rand Knight. Total package: Young, smart, good looking, beautiful family, and a sparkling personality. He had tons of volunteers and a decent amount of money - but lost.

Yesterday shows Obama's coattails carried the Democrat in the GE but those voters didn't come back in the runoff.

If many Obama voters in GA were politically involved, they would have come back. But many Obama voters were voting for Obama - not the Democratic party and not for a veto-proof majority they probably don't even understand.

And before anyone suggests it - I'm not just talking about black voters. I'm also talking about young white uninvolved first time voters.
