This Whole Fucking "Balance of Power" Shit is Fucking Ridiculous
Edited on Tue Dec-02-08 10:23 PM by prodn2000
OK. Seriously. This shit is getting really fucking old.

We have AT LEAST 255 seats in the House (or nearly 59%.)

We have AT LEAST 56 seats in the Senate and are joined by 2 Independents that vote with the Democrats (or 58%.)

Bush and the Republicans NEVER had these type of margins. The best that they EVER had this generation was after 2004.
They had 232 seats in the House (or 53.3%) and 55 seats in the Senate (or 55%.)

And now the media is pushing this meme that Obama will be powerless and ineffective because the Democrats do not have 60+ seats.

The only time in the last 40 years that either party had won more than 60 seats in the Senate was when the Democrats had huge gains after Watergate.

We have huge margins in the House, in the Senate, and we have retaken the White House with an overwhelming victory in November.

We will get shit done and we don't need Saxby Chambliss for anything.

:banghead:

1. Well now that the election is over
and the story about Clinton being appointed SoS has died down, they need something else to harp on.

4. Talk about moving the goalposts.
I expect the next media meme will be "Well, the President is more of an honorary title...kind of like a mascot." The Democratic Party could cure cancer and the MSM would bitch that "there are too many old people".

5. Obama has higher expectations, that being said...
FDR didn't get a filibuster proof majority in the 1932 elections. By today's standards he would have had it but it was 2/3rds for cloture back then, not 3/5ths.

7. I find it advantageous to Dems for most folks to buy this media line
That is, folks believing that Obama can't move legislation without 60 votes in the Senate.

Since the economy will get worse before it gets better, I would not want Obama to be portrayed as super powerful....considering that there will have to be some suffering before things improve...and I'd hate for only Democrats to be blamed come mid-term election 2010.

9. That is a wise and cautious approach

Still, in the last 2 elections, we have gone from the a minority party with representation in the Congress around 44-45% and now we DOMINATE with nearly 60% in each body.

When were the pundits in 2004 claiming that Bush would be powerless because the Republicans didn't get a super-majority in the Senate?

8. The media are wringing their hands aren't they?
The Democrats aren't worried. Even two senators short of the sixty is not a problem because they know there will be Democrats who do not walk in lock step, and there will be moderate Republicans who can be persuaded to cross the aisle and the movers and shakers know who they are.

14. Don't headbang. That is exactly the line we want people to hear:
that this is a divided government, where the Republicans are getting a fair shake, and where expectations are low. That gives us a lot more breathing room. If people see us as tyrannical autocrats with full and unchecked control of government, they'll look on us a lot less favorably.

16. But....
We WON.

And WON big.

Why does the media get to "move the goalposts." <--- Thanks to MPK

Bush's 51-48 "mandate" was all the rage in '04.

We win by a much larger margin PLUS reinforce our margins in the House and Senate and we are supposed to be humble?

18. As long as we have the votes, we get the legislation enacted.....
doesn't really matter what the media says.

Let Barack use his bully pulpit to affect public opinion.
Right now, he's got a 75% approval rating.

whether we have 60 or 58 in the senate won't matter
if Americans want what Obama is selling.

19. Dems claimed they needed 60 but neocoons
directly after passed something with less than 59, I remember thinking they(neocons) openly did that to prove to Dem voters that Dems don't WANT to side with their own. I was outraged, still am...prodn2000=bull's eye.

to count for joe lieberman maybe bailing out.

If we had gotten 61, they would have said we need 67 to pass consitutional amendments...

24. You are so right...
"If the Dems don't get to 60, they will become a "lame-duck" Congress.

Really?

The Republicans who caused the meltdown on Wall Street/Main Street/1st Street totally had 60+ votes in the Republican Senate.

O, wait, they didn't.
