We will need Inauguration Day mobilizations to defend progressive policies.
Edited on Wed Dec-03-08 01:57 AM by Ken Burch
We welcome the swearing in of Barack Obama. But we are terrified that the Wall Street/DLC types are succeeding in pushing him just as far to the right as Bill Clinton was. Everyone knows that an Obama presidency that wasn't even an inch to the left of the last Democratic Administration simply couldn't be worth having. Everyone also knows that such an administration would be doomed to a single-term defeat.

The only way to have a successful Democratic presidency is for progressives to stand and be counted, to remind President-elect Obama that we had as much to do with his victory as anyone else and that he has no right to abandon progressive principles. Centrism CAN'T be change. And it can't be successful as policy.

We will need to mobilize in defense of these ideasL

1)No Delay in the Iraq Withdrawal/No Saber-rattling with Iran/No War in Pakistan!
2)No abandonment of the windfall profits tax.
3)Pass the Employee Free Choice Act NOW!
4)No progressive-free cabinet(an all-centrist, all-"insider" cabinet CAN'T carry out "CHANGE")
5)No retrenchment on the healthcare proposal-And KEEP SINGLE-PAYER on the table!
6)No hostile relations with progressive countries in Latin America.
7)Full Civil Rights for LGBT people now!

This will not be an "anti-Obama" event. It will be a "defend Obama" event.

Centrists are trying to steal power and make sure President Obama fails. Progressives MUST NOT LET THEM SUCCEED!
Democracy and the work of hundreds of thousands of activists all across this country are at risk!

DEFEND OBAMA! DEFEND AMERICA! DEFEND OURSELVES!

1. Yes, Obama is being held hostage by the Evil Centrists, and can't say anything about it.
We must save our captured, helpless princess. Oh, wait, no, that's the flimsiest justification for a knee-jerk protest I've ever seen. But yeah, go ahead and protest Obama on inauguration day. It seems the outrage-addicts' goal is to make the left look mentally imbalanced anyway, so it fits.

2. I just said it's pro-Obama, not anti-Obama.
Why do you want this administration to be reduced to nothingness?

Why limit ourselves to centrism when we know it doesn't work and can't be sustained?

We need New Deal thinking here-visionary, free-spirited debate and discussion with interaction at all times from the grassroots. Why on Earth would you object to that?

7. "We" means the country, the party and the Obama movement.
All of which lose if the administration gets locked into centrism and the "this is a center-right country" meme.

Innovation can't happen if that's how it goes down.

9. I think you are confused. "We" are happy with Obama -- in fact ecstatic.
Perhaps you should find a "progressive" candidate and start campaigning for 2012.

10. 'Everyone' knows this and 'Everyone' knows that.
In several threads, you say you only speak for yourself. Yet then you start another thread where you not only pretend to represent 'EVERYONE', but you (as a representative of everyone) make claims that almost no one would agree with.

You say that everyone agrees that an administration like Bill Clinton's is an administration not worth having. Bullshit. If Bill Clinton himself were the nominee, the vast majority of DU would vote for him over the alternative (I guess by definition, since those that proclaim otherwise would be banned).

You say that if Obama acts too much like Clinton, he will be doomed to a single-term defeat, despite the fact that Clinton himself won re-election in a landslide. Yup, thats actually what you said.
