Florida Freedom and wire reports

U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez's decision not to run for re-election in 2010 could open up Congressman Allen Boyd's seat in the House of Representatives.

Boyd, a Democrat from Monticello who just won his seventh term representing Florida's 2nd Congressional District, which stretches from Okaloosa County to east of Tallahassee, acknowledged Tuesday that he is interested in running for the Senate seat.

Meanwhile, former House Speaker Allan Bense, of Panama City, also is being mentioned as a potential candidate.

Bense considered a run for Senate in 2006. Party leaders urged him to challenge then-U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris in the Republican primary, but Bense refused to start a campaign while still serving as speaker.

He told The Associated Press on Tuesday he is considering a run and will make a decision in the next several weeks.
