With attention swirling around rejected absentee ballots in the U.S. Senate recount, some local election officials say there could have been far more ballots rejected.
In Olmsted County, election officials contacted voters whose absentee ballots would have been rejected otherwise for minor errors -- such as a forgotten signature or conflicting addresses. Voters were offered the chance to fix the mistake.

Not every absentee voter got a second chance. Rochester voter Richard Haefner was angered to discover that his absentee ballot was rejected. A Franken campaign worker notified him. Haefner said he voted absentee at the Olmsted County Courthouse and was never told there was a problem.
According to Olmsted County records, Haefner's ballot was rejected with the reason marked "other" with no further explanation.
He's frustrated that in such a close race his ballot will not be considered.
"Obviously in the presidential race and the 1st District congress race, one vote one way or another is not going to matter. But in the Senate race, yes," he said.
