10. sorry, but i really mean it.
It takes courage to go with a new-comer early on. Im SERIOUSLY praising his judgment on this. If his choices hurt the feelings of a few, then it is THEY that must deal.

76. Yes. The current Commerce Secretary is Carlos Gutierrez.
He was formerly the CEO of Kellogg's.

He is of Cuban descent.

Of course, Alberto Gonzales was of Central American descent, but that's best forgotten.

I'm thinking that there may have been another one in the Bush fiascos, but I'm not positive.

14. Yeah, I saw that crappy thread yesterday.
It was set up for that very purpose. They just can't let it go.

Good to see Governor Richardson at Commerce. For all his detractors want to attack him, I would counter with the fact that this is now Richardson's third job in the Executive branch. And it's absolutely no surprise that he was going to be somewhere in this Administration (though it's no secret I was hoping he'd get the State Department)

in writing this OP. I join you in saying enough is enough. No more trashing of this tremendous democrat who showed the strength of his convictions and excellent judgment. I love his intelligence and sense of humor. I love it that he is a fellow westerner. And I love it that our hispanic brothers and sisters are being heard and are represented at all levels of government.

His experience as Secretary of Commerce will add to an already amazing resume - one that would be difficult for anyone to beat in 8 years. :)

16. Well as BR for prez guy initially I feel mixed
Obviously (as I and no doubt he even better by far) realized at the time there was very little chance for him to become president. I had perhaps hoped he would be SoS but despite his resume he can't match Hillary's star power and international appeal so OK. Commerce is a good cabinet position. It's maybe not an ideal match for him in my mind but I'm sure he'll do a bang up job.

Oh and a lot of the angst some DUers have with him comes from two issues - his admittedly ill considered and probably misleading answer that he considered homosexuality a choice not something a person is born to be, and rather strained and fourteenth-hand rumors about his insensitivity to women in meetings and staff interactions etc.

Even if all these are tru, I have to judge a person on the sum of their abilities and perfection is not an option for any human. Obama is too religiously geared for me for example, but I doubnt that will stop him from being a fine president any more than Bill R's pecadillos will stop him being a fine Commerce Sec - and those are the important criteria.

i firmly believe he meant to say preference
as in sexual preference
those using this have other issues they are hiding behind it
i myself feel he is in commerce as a stopover before the inevitable happens and we need a new SoS
a back up if you will
ready on day one

21. I agree on all counts but a bit less probable for SoS than you suggest IMO.
Hillary is not going to be a bad SoS I don't think, and the only good way to end that relationship is to resign in 2014 with the express inyent of running for prez when BO no longer can (by which time whe will be susceptible to the same claims of age worry that Reagan and McCain were) or just flat out retiring, which I can't see as likely.

The only other options even if just spun as an amicable agreement will always be seen as a "firing" or inability to get along.

Did Richardson not say that? He did say that. He has been very gay friendly in some of his policy decisions. Which is to be expected... but it is no lie to state that he said he feels homosexuality is a choice. That is a very offensive position to many in the gay community. Myself included. He made a retraction that he miss-spoke... but you cannot take back something like that.

That being said, it doesn't mean I dislike him for it, but please do not try and become a historical revisionist. He did say it.

Governor Bill Richardson to Receive International Role Model Award at
International Equality Dinner

PHILADELPHIA, May 1 /USNewswire-PRNewswire/ -- Equality Forum, a national
and international GLBT civil rights organization, will recognize New Mexico
Governor Bill Richardson with its 13th annual International Role Model Award,
and Wachovia Corporation will receive its 2008 International Business

orientation and gender identity. He provided state health insurance for
domestic partnerships, and called a special legislative session to enact civil
union benefits.
"Throughout his career in public service, Governor Richardson has been a
strong supporter and friend of the GLBT community. Governor Richardson has
repeatedly used his political standing to champion GLBT civil rights," stated
Malcolm Lazin, Executive Director of Equality Forum.
