hahaha, I love how so many anti-Clinton people are inadvertantly paying Bill the biggest compliment
in the world.

In lieu of the Caroline Kennedy debate, the attacks against Hillary have stepped up to a feverish pitch once again, as if all the unnecessary attacks toward her in the last couple of weeks haven't been enough. Now the usual detractors are claiming that Hillary would never have gotten elected to the Senate, had it not been for the fact that she was married to Bill.

Not that any of them realize it, but everytime a Clinton naysayer makes that argument, they are inadvertantly paying Bill the biggest compliment imaginable without even knowing it. LOLOL!

2. Too logical for this crowd
Just as they do not realize the hypocrisy of bashing Hillary - an activist all her life - as not being qualified to be a senator, while promoting Caroline Kennedy - who guarded her privacy all these years - as the second coming.

Edited on Sat Dec-06-08 01:50 PM by Mass
saying she should not get the Senate seat because she never did anything in her life.

I do not know if she should get it, but I see a game played BOTH WAYS and you and other Hillary Clinton's supporters do not honor her the least by continuing this war. This has stopped being opinion and is become ad hominem again. It may surprise you, but Hillary Clinton is not the center of the universe for most of us.

5. Now that's precious...you telling me that Hillary isn't the center of the universe
You of all people who runs around making every excuse in the book for John Kerry, just at the drop of a pin, should be the last person to preach to anyone about having certain people at the center of their universe.

BTW, I expressed no opinion in my post as to whether or not Caroline Kennedy should be appointed Senator of NY. I guess that was clear to everyone but you. Nice try...

Nor does Senator Clinton.

But I'm more than happy to defend both when wrongfully attacked.

39. LOL. I can see my initial inquiry stayed without answer. Sorry, nobody is the center of the universe
I just hope the governor of NY chooses somebody who is qualified for the job and not only because of his/her name.

You distort my point because it does not suit you, I can understand that, but let's be clear: I do not make excuses for Kerry any more than you do on Clinton. But this thread and others are actually diminishing her, but your pettiness. No, it would not be a compliment for Clinton to say he used his position to put her in her job. It would be the same cronyism than the Bush have shown. As I said in another thread, those who said that are idiots sexists, so I have no sympathy for them, but I have still to see one of these posts unprovoked. That does not justify it, but it still explains a lot.

How exactly are we "continuing this war"? Are you saying we should all simply shut up and not defend Hillary against the really unfair and ad hominem attacks on her? We should all just sit back and shut up whe someone whom we admire is viciously vilified? Is that how we are "continuing this war?

There isn't a member of my family who doesn't have a picture of John F Kennedy hanging somewhere in their house, and for good reason. My sister and I even have our own portrait of JFK which was painted by someone in our family, so you can take your useless lies and shove them where the sun dont shine.

15. She was elected from a state that she had until that
point never been a resident of.

She was elected to the Senate as the Senator from New York specifically because she was the wife of the President.

Get over it! She is carpetbagger in the finest historical sense.

It doesn't mean she isn't qualified to be SOS or, if she had run a competent campaign and had been elected, President.

33. Well they would have been wrong in 1964....
RFK lived in New York and went to school in New York in his youth so he had valid ties to the state.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_F._Kennedy

"In September 1927, when he was almost 2, Kennedy moved with his family to a rented 20-room mansion in Riverdale, New York, then two years later, moved 5 miles (8.0 km) northeast to a 21-room mansion on a six-acre estate in Bronxville, New York, purchased in May 1929. Kennedy spent summers with his family at their home in Hyannisport, Massachusetts, purchased in 1929, and Christmas and Easter holidays with his family at their winter home in Palm Beach, Florida, purchased in 1933. He attended public elementary school in Riverdale from kindergarten through 2nd grade, then Bronxville School, the public school in Bronxville from 3rd through 5th grade, then Riverdale Country School, a private school for boys in Riverdale for 6th grade."

So anything similar other than a couple of weeks in Skaneatles?

Do you honestly want me to explain to you how people are indvertantly complimenting Bill whenever they attack Hillary by saying she only got elected because of her name?

You might actually make a bit of sense if you did. I'm sure that you could count on one hand the number of people on this site that don't have a positive opinion of Clinton's 2 terms as president. They may not like the man now, but few people except the rabid right wing would deny his success as president, and the likelihood of them being on DU is slim to none anyway.

And your argument is specious anyway. Saying that a woman became prominent herself because she was married to a prominent man is not a compliment of the man that she was married to. Is me saying that Nicole Kidman would never have become a household name if it weren't for her marriage to Tom Cruise a COMPLIMENT of Tom Cruise or just an acknowledgment of fact?? Whether the statement is true, somewhat true or not at all true, it's really a weak argument.

52. well, it does say something regarding the promenance of the coattails
Essentially, the argument goes that since Bill was so popular and successful, Hillary was able to ride his name into a senate seat.

whether that is true or not is less interesting than how smart this OP poster feels after exposing what he thinks is some grand insult to the hill-haters. Thats the funny part. I'm sure hes grinning like the grinch without knowing that most people that don't like Hillary still love Bill.

47. So people are calling Bill Clinton famous/popular at the time of Hillary's senate run? That's true.
But its not always the biggest compliment ever. Popularity is nice, but a lot of people were popular at some point. Reagan was probably even more popular than Clinton (maybe not in NY, but if some Reagan family member ran for something, they would likely benefit enormously).

51. That's not the highest compliment imaginable.
President Clinton has had to content himself with being widely loved--and part of that is due to the mountain of suck that succeeded him. He won't be on any short lists of greatest presidents; too much stuff that began on his watch has come back to bite us in our collective ass.

Senator Clinton is talented in her own right, but it's useless to speculate on whether or not she would have won an election without her husband.
