Good God! Get the fuck over it!
Are we back to the primaries again? If Howard Wolfson did this, If Hillary did that...

A speechwriter does something very dumb and soon after apologizes and yet some on DU are outraged over why more DUers are not outraged?

Seriously, WTF? :wtf:

Enough with these projections and silly cries over sexism and racism. Why do we insist so much on playing the victim card? Do we really feel that insecure or behind the game?

2. Don't you see the irony in starting an outrage thread telling others to get over it? :)

3. I'd like to know if any of THEM ever did anything stupid at a party.
Or anywhere else for that matter. Then they should post pictures of it so we can rip them apart for it.

6. We ain't got shit else to do.
Outrage has been a permanent state of mind for the last 8 years.

There is no going back now....and any topic will do.

Without the outrage, what would we do with ourselves?
Can't be outraged at the right, cause they lost.
Can't be outraged at the media, because we follow them following us?
Can't be totally outraged at Obama yet; he's not been sworn in yet.
Can't be outraged at Bush; he's on his way out.

In otherwords, we've got nothin', so this will do very nicely for now!

20. I think a little outrage over sexism is a good thing. Just as
outrage over racism is a good thing.

24. Oftentime when I have mentioned Racism, I was told that
it was only happening coming from the Obama camp.

I'm so glad the Primaries are over though.
So glad there are not votes to be gotten due to partisan outrage.

7. No! Cardboard cutouts have rights! This cutout was abused sexually!
Edited on Mon Dec-08-08 02:45 PM by dmallind
I mean even the people who want to say this is nothing still say it was "stupid" or "drunken". I fail to see how it was necessarily either, and even if both, what that has to do with a speechwriter.

When he writes a speech for Obama that includes "and I want to put my hands on cardboard representations of Hillary's boobs" THEN it's stupid. Doing so yourself in a private capacity unrelated to your job is no more stupid (or sexist) than crumpling up a magazine with pictures of women in it.

And to forestall the predictable tiresome outrage addicts yes I'd say the same if it were my wife, or a man, or a Republican, or Mrs. Obama, or any other example you can think of. It was fricking cardboard and cardboard has neither feelings nor rights.

To touch a cardboard cutout while smiling and making an obvious joke? Do you think this is a sign he really thinks it's OK to grab womens' boobs?

16. Politics is often more about perception than reality
..which is why, for example, we forbid our public servants to engage in activity that even APPEARS to be a conflict of interest. It isn't fair, of course, but it's reality. Hell, on my last project I couldn't buy a pizza for my public-sector client, for fear of appearing to be 'bribing' him.

In this case, the giuy in question engaged in activity that APPEARS to condone sexist, degrading conduct. And he's supposed to be in communications, for crying out loud. He should know better.

Not ready for prime time. Let him grow up and try again later.

18. So - only ascetic monks are allowed to work for Obama?
I know what you are saying and the pragmatist in me agrees that percpetion is (overly) important, but the rationalist in me says there is no earthly fucking reason why it should be and resents the hell out of even other people (let alone me, who has fat too atheistic a trail to ever even consider public or poiltical service) having to pretend to be characterless joyless drones so they can do a job completely unrelated to their "bad" activities.

22. In principle, I agree completely
I never realized what an up-tight asshole nation America was, until I traveled abroad. Blue laws, all that shit we have here. And issues like this one. *sigh* It truly IS stupid and irrational. But it's the hand we've been dealt, and having sat down at the table, it's the hand we must play.

Obama is smart, tough, and above all DISCIPLINED. So too must be his entire team, top to bottom. Obama needs to have as few hindrances as possible, and needs as many people on his team who are as smart as he is. He can't use anyone (or anything) less.

This kid is talented, and in a rational world, that would be enough. In this one, he's not there yet.

Liberal reaction to the picture: OMG, that's sooooo sexist and oppresses women everywhere. Also, it caused the Holocaust.

Non-liberal reaction to the picture: LOL.

But sometimes I can understand why people make of liberals for excessive PC-ness. I personally didn't even care about that New Yorker cover. I can understand why the campaign worried about it before the election, but I don't see what the big deal is.
