Liberals voice concerns about Obama
Edited on Mon Dec-08-08 03:54 PM by Roon
Liberals are growing increasingly nervous – and some just flat-out angry – that President-elect Barack Obama seems to be stiffing them on Cabinet jobs and policy choices.

Obama has reversed pledges to immediately repeal tax cuts for the wealthy and take on Big Oil. He’s hedged his call for a quick drawdown in Iraq. And he’s stocking his White House with anything but stalwarts of the left.

Now some are shedding a reluctance to puncture the liberal euphoria at being rid of President George W. Bush to say, in effect, that the new boss looks like the old boss.

“He has confirmed what our suspicions were by surrounding himself with a centrist to right cabinet. But we do hope that before it's all over we can get at least one authentic progressive appointment,” said Tim Carpenter, national director of the Progressive Democrats of America.

3. More of the same.
Obama ran as a centrist. He even said before the election that there was a possibility of some republicans in his cabinet. What makes (some) liberals think that he might suddenly take a hard left now that the election is over?

He hasn't even taken office yet, but the left is trying to claim that Obama is betraying them.

Sure, but no one expected a complete shutout of true liberals in his cabinet when he ran on a platform of listening to diverse viewpoints in his administration.

8. If you want diversity...
Would you be in favor of right-wingers as well as left-wingers in the cabinet, or does your idea of "diversity" only extend one way?

There are plenty of conservatives in the Democratic party. It's appropriate that they are also represented in a Democratic administration. Besides, many of Bill Clinton's picks and policies were moderate to conservative, and most of them worked out pretty well. NAFTA is the obvious exception, but I haven't seen any sign that we're going to get out of that one any time soon.
