By Anne E. Kornblut
Robert Gibbs, the incoming White House press secretary, is reportedly taking the job very seriously -- so seriously, in fact, that he is doing press secretary prep work during the transition to be ready for his first day at the podium.
Gibbs is conducting practice briefings and studying up on issues, Obama aides said, with the help of Anita Dunn, who was a senior communications adviser during the campaign. He is far from the only one doing homework: appointed Cabinet secretaries, from Secretary of State-designate Hillary Clinton to Attorney General nominee Eric Holder, are preparing for their upcoming confirmation hearings.
But the stakes are especially high for Gibbs, who still has to prove his grasp of the issues before a press corps that has gotten to know him mostly in a political setting. Gibbs did not immediately respond to an inquiry about his prep work (a sign, perhaps, of how burrowed in he is?). Democratic consultant Jim Jordan, who threw a party for Gibbs in Washington last week, said he was unaware of the tutoring sessions but described them as "very smart."
Gibbs also has plans to shadow current White House press secretary Dana Perino before Obama takes office.
