Obama to meet with Al Gore Tuesday to discuss possible role in administration
Edited on Mon Dec-08-08 09:01 PM by DCBob
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former Vice President Al Gore is set to meet with President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden Tuesday, leading to speculation Obama is eyeing Gore for a slot in his administration. According to the Obama transition office, the meeting will focus on issues relating to energy and climate change, and how the new administration's environmental policies can spur job creation. Democratic officials have said Obama is not looking to tap Gore for a Cabinet-level post or any other position in the administration. But a Gore appointment would almost certainly be greeted with celebration from members of the party's liberal wing, many of whom are still angry he lost the White House in 2000 despite winning the popular vote.

I hope Al is appointed "Climate Czar". I hate that term "czar" but I guess that's basically what it would be.

.... seriously. This would be AMAZING!!!!

I remember someone who apparently knew about such things saying that if we could see the Barack's list of first choice cabinet appointees our respective minds would be blown!

I fully expect Springsteen to be on it by the time we're done.

7. Gore has already said he doesn't want a cabinet post
but I sure hope he can be convinced to be "czar," for want of a better word.

Take it, Al, take it! We need you somewhere in the administration.

There must be something going on for this story to be leaked like this.

14. You should add a "?" to your title. The article says explicitely that this is pure speculation.
Not that I would dislike this, but Gore said he was not interested.

18. The meeting is not speculation and they are discussing "issues relating to energy & climate change"
Surely they will also discuss Al's role in the future in all this. Why leak this to press if there wasn't something brewing? But, yes I guess you are right, it is still speculation. Too late to add the "?".

19. True, but the article has 2 sentences that completely condradict each other
One saying that Obama is looking to give him a "slot" in the administration, the other saying that "Democrats say he isn't".

Here is a NYT op-ed from Gore written since the election - http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/09/opinion/09gore.html?_r=1&pagewanted=2 Obama has not said anything detailed enough to make it easy to see if they are on the same page. If they are not on the same page, the question is whether Gore could influence the overall result more in the administration or as an independent voice.

His input was sought by Senator Kerry, who spoke of having spoken to Gore as part of preparing for the Poland talks that he will attend tommorow and his plans for SFRC hearings on global warming. This could mean that he knows Gore will lead on this or simply reflect Kerry's long term respect for Gore on global warming.
