When will word processors update to recognize "Obama?"
Edited on Tue Dec-09-08 10:30 PM by margotb822
I just find the red squiggly line under his name sad. When can we add his name to the dictionary?

ETA: there is a bit of :sarcasm: here, but also, has anyone else ever had the spellchecker suggest Osama in place of Obama? Yea, that needs to end.

1. Most word processors do not recognize uncommon surnames.
I had to add my own to my dictionary.

5. I had to add my own as well, but
I'm not the PE. I know I can do it, but that means I have to on every computer I use.

Actually, I think what is more irritating is that it wants to change Obama to Osama. If the latter is recognized, the former certainly should be!

6. Really? I use Microsoft Word and it's never done that.
I'm surprised other programs have "Osama" in the dictionary. How often are people typing it, anyway?

7. I am in the Navy
so maybe someone added it to the MS word installed on our computers. Is that even possible? I have definitely noticed it and thought it was very strange.

8. Ah, I see. That makes sense. They should definitely add the P-E then!

BTW, what do you do for the Navy? I was in from 1987 to 1997. I was a Torpedoman's Mate.

10. I am a Surface Warfare Officer (ship driver)
Right now I do a lot of scheduling and planning, so I spend most of the day in front of the computer.

I don't know if surprised, but there are definitely a lot of ex-Navy here (I think more than other services).

12. I've noticed that too.
Maybe there's something about the sea life that causes people to become liberal! ;) I was stunned to learn that 2 of my ex-boyfriends from the Navy voted for Obama.

2. Most word processors do not recognize foreign names.
It may be added next year though. I do not find it "sad" as he just won election and it takes time to update software.

13. Yeah...adding a name to your spellchecker's vocabulary is simple
If you've been writing "Obama" a lot, you should've added it yourself long ago. ;)

9. If it makes you feel any better,
the iPhone keyboard knows Obama should be capitalized as a proper name. :)

14. Yep I was gonna say! And I think it was added in the last update,
because it didn't recognize it before the election (as far as I remember)
