6. "Tolerance" is a naughty word but otherwise...
... great post.

"Tolerate" means to "put up with." We are to love and cherish one another ... not "put up with" each other.

Sorry, soap box moment over. :)

25. I disagree
Tolerance is all I can expect or hope for from the religionist bigots of this world. They will never be accepting and loving, and waiting for that to occur is out of the question. If the choice is tolerance, or having millions shoved into ovens while we wait for the Christian love to kick in, I'll take that tolerance anytime. It was that specific experience that lead to the choice of the word that bothers you. Chosen by those who survived.
My guess is the word has differnt nuances to some of us than it does to you.

36. Very true...
I think that we cannot force people to actually accept the ways, thoughts, and religions of others, but we can demand they tolerate and not cause other's problems just because their belief system is different... or their skin color... or their sexual orientation...

48. Simon Wiesenthal was not what I thought he was....
I recently read a book on the revelations about Kurt Waldheim, and it turns out Wiesenthal was all about covering up the fact that Waldheim had been a Nazi. Also pointed out that he had taken credit for the Eichmann capture, but had only been marginally involved in it. Fascinating stuff.

I used to have the greatest respect for Wiesenthal. Now I'm utterly disgusted.

I found this link because the one on Amazon doesn't have a picture. I was skeptical at first too, but the authors present a pretty good case.

I don't remember all the evidence because it's been about 3 years since I finished it, but it really socked it to him.

24. Hmmmm, not in any definition I can find.
1. a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one's own; freedom from bigotry.
2. a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward opinions and practices that differ from one's own.
3. interest in and concern for ideas, opinions, practices, etc., foreign to one's own; a liberal, undogmatic viewpoint.

On the other hand, tolerance for the sake of simply getting along is anathema. Tolerance without adherence to principle is cowardice and sometimes descends into outright depravity. I would say poor practitioners of tolerance give the concept a bad name, not the principled practice of tolerance in itself.

And Faux Christians. They can't seem to grasp the concept of tolerance. No one is trying to change their minds or beliefs. There's no thought police telling them they have to accept anyone else, just be tolerant of differences.

What a pity.

56. Tolerance for their religious liberty is required of egalitarians like me.
Tolerance of their intolerance is not. It always gets under my skin how they hold our position of philosophically committed tolerance in such contempt, then turn around and view us as hypocrites when we are intolerant of their intolerance. We as tolerant persons are not required to tolerate their intransigent intolerance. Why? Because intolerance is antithetical to tolerance.

We who value Liberty above all might as well embrace the liberty of those whose sole aim is to abolish Liberty to work toward that objective.

2 a: sympathy or indulgence for beliefs or practices differing from or conflicting with one's own

And that's not naughty at all. I don't expect anyone else to "cherish" my beliefs, but I do expect them not to suppress them either.

65. The other W's thoughts on 'tolerance'
I think I get your point, and that it was the same one articulated by George Washington in the widely-cited quote:

"All possess alike liberty of conscience and immunities of citizenship. It is now no more that toleration is spoken of, as if it was by the indulgence of one class of people that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights."

I have no objection to tolerance, but to the assumption of what is normal, and who is tolerating whom. That being said, change is usually slow, and the first step is usually grudging "tolerance" by people who can no longer enforce their views on others.

So, I guess it's not the goal, but it's a start, and I'll damn well take it!

nor should you. you can, however, and should expect people to tolerate (ie. not unduly antagonize) others based on race, ethnicity, other special status, or behavior (so long as it does not do real harm to a non-consenting other).
