Why didn't the fundies go nuts then?? It was published in a NY Times article, then. I'm looking for the link, but it's hard to find via google with all the brouhaha over his latest remarks.

The fundies tied their star to his wagon, and now are looking for a way to untie it. Screw 'em.

The entire article shoiws he was trying to be the "compassionate conservative - on the surface saying things moderates were ok with and using code to say something else to his base.
