orations?

The belief that "the market" is akin to gravity and not man made. That it is infallible and without question. That it alone can determine the "best social balance". That greed is good. That resources are unlimited.

Everything else comes from that.

30. New American religion.
When I was young, America prided itself on the strength of its democracy. Over the years, the media has shunted democracy off to the side and pushed capitalism into the limelight as the central pillar of "American" values. We have traded gold for dross.

A "free" market is an oxymoron. Any functional market requires fixed times and places, a means of exchange, a means of resolving disputes, infrastructure to enable the safe transport and exchange of goods/services, etc. A better description of the ideal market would be "efficient." This begs the question of efficient for what and for whom. At a minimum, markets should demonstrably help more people than they hurt. Society provides the conditions which enable the functioning of the marketplace and society (the majority of the people) should expect to benefit from that functioning.

Markets should be tinkered with occasionally as needed. Sometimes they will require more regulation, sometimes less. It's called trial and error and there is nothing sacrosanct about it.

40. I know what forum we're on, but let's be honest—
the Democrats haven't exactly been fighting them tooth and nail, have they? Why do you think they still refused to bring impeachment hearings, despite the fact that the list of this administration's crimes is the size of a goddamn phone book? Because, in the course of the proceedings, a whole lot of Democrats would have been caught in that big, ugly spotlight, and anyone who's not blind knows it.

"The republican party is responsible for global warming, the national debt and other things that are causing this country problems!?" All by themselves? I think you're a little too impressed by them. They couldn't have done anywhere near as much damage as they have over the last eight years if anybody had offered even halfhearted resistance to them. Name ONE THING the Congressional Democrats ever denied the White House. Even after they took control of Congress in '06 they STILL kept rolling over and giving Bush absolutely everything he ever demanded.

I'm a liberal, too, but I'm not blind, and I won't hesitate to call out my own when they fuck up.

The question is, what do we do now?

19. As soon as I read the question I thought "Republicans, duh!"
Threats from the inside are always more serious than external threats because they tear the country apart rather than merely attacking (and meanwhile unifying) it. The major threat I see to America from the inside is from Republicans, represented by Fox "News" and right-wing hate radio.

this is NOT a just single/"pet" issue (as some dim bulbs here at DU might imply) as it effects our national security and our economy(it drains our financial resources that could be utilized elsewhere).

36. The Mainstream News Media
Here me out.

The problem with the mainstream news media is that they have dropped the ball as clear journalists and a filter to stop wars, homophobia, McCarthyism, deception and all matters of actually hurting this country by playing along with neocons, theocrats and their hangers-on.

The mainstream news media scares me more than anything. They can project fear and help destroy democracy in a matter of a couple days if they want. And the ones in charge are ready to unleash fear at any moment for any reason.

44. The Foreign policy neoconservatives are by far the gravest immediate threat to America and the world
Of course most foreign policy neoconservatives are in the Republican Party. However, unfortunately these dangerous and irrational ideologues are not limited to only the Republican Party.

If these evil madman have their way, America will be in a constant state of intractable conflict with not only the Arab and Islamic world but Russia and whatever other enemies they can cook up.

There will be no resources left over for advancement in education or social programs or even maintenance of the existing infrastructure if these ignorant and ethnocentric wacko's have their way.
