Mathews This Morn; Obama Wants To Set Up A Truth Commission
It was in the predictions section of the show and I don't remember who said it, might have been Andrew Sullivan. But eventually he wants this commission set up to investigate war crimes and the torture issue.

4. The thing about Truth Commissions is that the crims get to go free if they mea culpa
That's the South African model, anyway. I don't know if that's worth it, although politically it would make a lot more sense.

7. They don't want it to turn into a partisan issue because it is too important. The precedent

of what Bush did can't stand so they need to get to the truth but take the political aspects out of it. It sounds like a decent idea to me.

Sullivan didn't say anything re prosecutions or people going free. He just mentioned that they are considering setting up a truth commission. No more details other then that they would have subpoena powers.

8. I Was Pleasantly Surprised To Hear This
It's a start and he. apparently, is willing. Good for him, it's a ;ot better then just walking away and pretending it didn't happen.

13. A Truth and Reconciliation would benefit this nation, the accuracy of the HISTORIC RECORD
and would undermine the global terrorism networks in their own regions.

Just imagine when more of those who've aligned with the terror movement realize the original players have been working FOR BushInc and its global fascist agenda all along.

19. Coverups and 'moving past' illegal administrations have hurt this country tragically and in ways
that we may never recover WITHOUT that truth told at long last.

in lies and millions believe these lies.

14. Yeah, he said it at the last
They would be independent like the 9/11 Commission. Not that I flag wave over that. But there were some fine moments during those hearings. So I welcome this move by Obama.

Sullivan also said something like that the new commission would get things out on the table. And for that alone I'm grateful. Another thing to feel good about. Seems like that happens almost every day.

:hi:

12. Re-affirm the Geneva Convention and the war Crimes related treaties and
let the World Court take care of matters. That will also remove the politics from the cure.

All that would be left would be to replace the red carpet up the gallows steps.

16. Glad to hear this is on the table as I've been reading Glen Greenwald
of Salon.com and he is calling for a special commission with possibly Patrick Fitzgerald leading it. Greenwald was on the Moyers' PBS show Friday and had a fascinating presentation that shouldn't be missed by anyone on this forum. You can probably see it on the Moyers' site, or at Greenwald's blog at Salon.com.

If for no other reason, read what he says about those of us Obama followers who don't want his selections questioned. He's been added to my list of "must reads".

17. It Was Good
Here's the link:http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/01/02/obstruction/

Sirota's piece on how the progressives were right about the bailout and their critics were wrong, once again, is also good.
