CKS is not establishment enough for the NY Dems.....

37. I was thinking about posting the question: if HRC endorsed Kennedy today,
would it make a difference, but I figured too many people would get really mad and fight more...

I wonder, though... the passion in the fight seems really out-sized somehow... curious.

4. How dare she keep that stinking Kennedy name!
All those damn Kennedy's who gave their lives to public service, championing the poor, lifting up those who have had to live their lives being trodden upon by racists.

Yeah, damn that Caroline, and the little pony she rode in on!

You know, I didn't really give a tinker's damn who got that seat, but with all the concern here today, I'm starting to feel the need to support this woman with all I have!

DU is very DUmb today.

19. They'll also have a voice in the senate, to represent NY.
My point is that appointments should be made on qualifications, and CK has none as running for (or being) a candidate for national, or even regional, office.

So just because she's not held elective office she shouldn't be considered?

So you'd pick someone like, oh I don't know, Sarah Palin over her?

24. False Dichotomy...
(I assume you mean "hasn't held" elective office.)

But since you brought up Sarah Palin, yes, she's actually *more* qualified to serve in the US Senate than CK is (SP has at least actually run an election and campaigned for people's votes). I'd more lean to, oh, Malcolm Smith as being more qualified than *both* of them for the role, as he's currently the NY senate D leader.

See why people are screaming from the rooftops now? Somebody's relative, with zero election and representation experience, is even being *considered* for appointment to one of the highest representation offices in the land, based on... what, exactly?

The whole thing just screams of corruption and nepotism.

25. This is where you lose me.
Edited on Mon Dec-15-08 10:00 PM by Drunken Irishman
Because not every senator has served as an elected official prior to the senate. In fact, many haven't. You don't get to set who is and who isn't qualified. That is all subjective and one could argue that Caroline Kennedy is more qualified for the senate based on what she has done in her life than Sarah Palin. Of course, if you use elective office as the sole reason for disqualifying someone, then you'll have to kick out a lot of senators who never held an office in their life prior to becoming senator.

Face it, your whole argument is rather pathetic. You want to disqualify her because of her name and that is sad.

But think what you want. I believe Caroline Kennedy is qualified and has every right to ask for the job. If she doesn't get it, I think she'll act with class and continue advocating for public education. If she does get it, I have no doubt she'll serve the state of New York with the highest degree of competence.

26. How many senators have served without ever being elected to ANYTHING?
Lots of senators without prior experience holding office have been elected to the senate, but the key point is that they were actually elected. By somebody, for something.

How many have been *appointed* to the senate without ever having had their name on any ballot, for any position, anywhere?

28. She doesn't want to serve NY, she wants to serve the Kennedy legacy
This is a woman who has devoted the bulk of her life to glorifying the family name through her foundation work and her books--Profiles of Courage Awards, christened the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy, Kennedy Foundation Library, The Best-Loved Poems of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, A Family of Poems: My Favorite Poetry for Children, A Family Christmas, and I think there's even a cookbook. She has little interest in the American people, but has a sick obsession with her family's legacy.

29. Hey, I'd like to serve the state of California
Really - I feel a deep emotional connection with my adopted home. I'm not sure this qualifies me to hold legislative office.

I have nothing against Caroline Kennedy, but let's be honest - life would have been very different if her name was Caroline Jones and her father was some grunt who died wearing a uniform in Viet Nam. She's made a really positive use of her political heritage, but doors were always going to swing open for a former president's relatives.

I'm a little skeptical about the fervor surrounding her, given that there are many other New Yorkers who have dedicated their lives to public service equally selflessly.

31. Well, I'm neutral - I don't know what New Yorkers want
But as I observed elsewhere, it seems like an elaborate maneuver to get her into the senate without the awkwardness of her taking up her uncle's set should it fall vacant. Caroline Kennedy does seem pretty awesome, but you'd think there were no other awesome people to be found in NY.

33. "Serve" in this context is something of a euphemism.
Sure, the ideal is that senators, governors etc are servants of the people rather than the other way round, but the reality is that they are more masters than servants.

So I think your point is somewhat disingenuous. If she was volunteering to serve by sweeping streets or delivering pro bono legal advice or donating blood, sure. But the issue with becoming a senator is not one of serving.

40. One of the main reasons the Kennedys have such a loyal following
is that historically they don't treat public service as a euphemism or as something you pretend to do in photo ops.

Or is it something about Caroline in particular that has people seeing red?
