Schumer Helped Block Regulation Of Ratings Agencies
By Zachary Roth - December 15, 2008, 12:03PM

<snip>

We told you last month about the role of the credit ratings agencies in helping to cause the financial crisis. A major part of the problem, in a nutshell, is that the major ratings agencies -- Moody's, Standard & Poor's, and Fitch -- are paid by the institutions (often investment banks) who are issuing the bonds. That gives the agencies a clear incentive to produce favorable ratings, or risk seeing the banks hire a different ratings agency that's willing to offer a better rating.

But over the weekend, in a profile of Sen. Chuck Schumer, the New York Times revealed that the veteran New York Democratic lawmaker -- who, with seats on both the finance and banking committees, has built a reputation as a key ally of the financial sector, a major industry in his home state -- played a major role in stymieing efforts to fix that problem.

That way we can ALL be happy, LOL!!!

:evilgrin:

Also... Chuckie is evidence that proves that however much as one has "earned' a senate seat, it does not preclude this...

7. Actually, the only question about his next election is 65% or 75%.
He won last time 71 to 24, carrying all but one counties. He even carried my county, which was the single REDDEST in NY in 2008.

Schumer isn't leaving office unless he gets something better or dies.

11. If you really think there's a chance Schumer is leaving, you don't know NY state politics.
Hell, the best they're likely to have running against him is King, from Long Island, who's a knuckledragging madman.

5. Okay, okay, I'll give a real response....
I don't think Schumer is the best Senator out there, but I'm not ready to kick him to the curb just yet. I'd have no problem with Caroline as my senator, to be honest. I'd rather just wait and see what Governor Patterson does.

9. Schumer has done an excellent job at the DSCC recruiting candidates in '06 and '08
Say what you will about his voting record but in the grand scheme of things you have to weigh that against everything he has done to put more Democrats in the Senate. We will have a far more progressive agenda because we have 58-59 Senators rather than just a razor thin majority.
