Explain to me how appointing anyone to the NY senate seat is an affront to democracy?
The law of the state of NY calls for the NY Govenor to appoint a Senate replacement if there is a vacancy. No matter who the Govenor chooses that person will not have been elected to the Senate. So please tell me how this candidate vs. that candidate is an affront to democracy? Also please explain to me how following the prescribed laws of the state of NY approved by their elected representives for this situation is some sort of affront on democracy.

Thank you.

1. I don't claim it's an affront to democracy
I do think the Caroline adulation represents American Idol type thinking. Sorry, I just do.

2. It isn't but
it most likely will be a pain in the ass to the appointee who must run in 2010 to fill the vacant seat and then (if the appointee wins) be up for reelection again in 2012.

where did the affront come from??

5. Great point. I really don't get all this outrage people are expressing here
over the possible appointment of Caroline K.

It's not as if the Governor were appointing a Republican, for goodness sake.

There may be some other people in NY state who are "deserving" of such an honor and such a hard job, but I fail to see any consistency in what is being posted here, nor any clear front runner for such an appointment.

NY people, please tell us who wants it and who is "deserving"?

9. Honestly, I think that's a reason why I'm so much more tolerant with Senators - Rick Santorum
That man was my senator for EIGHT YEARS (had to move to Delaware to get rid of him) so yeah, I'm a bit more tolerant (well except for Chris Matthews but geez, the guy was a major Bush Cheerleader during his term up until it because vogue to hate on Bush).

Navy retiree here, born in Philly, lived six blocks from Connie Mack. Love the Phillies, (not too fond of 1964.) Got my Mike Schmidt shrine in the garage.

15. Little younger
My grandmother and my aunt used to take me to the vet in the 80s about 4 times a year to see Schmidt. Had a lifesize milk poster with a ruler showing you how tall you were in my room when I was a kid :-)
