In the debates about Obama, half the time I have no idea what people mean?. Ideology?; Political stance, relative to the electorate?; A coherent set of goals?; A collection of policies?; Issues, including single issues?; Rhetoric?

Perhaps the combatants in GD-P, could explain what they understand by these labels? Section 1 - Domestic policy. I mean what are we arguing about?

1. Here it is.

If you like Obama, he's left. If you dislike Obama he's right. The political spectrum is largely defined by one's own views. And in the end, it's all bullshit.

6. You're right - it is all bullshit.
Because I like Obama, and I am a leftist, and he is a center-right Democratic politician on most issues.

BTW, the republican party STARTS at the center right, and moves right from there.

3. You do the hokey pokey and you turn yourself around...
That's what it's all about!

All those things mean less than a dancing clown. When most Republicans try to describe what their party platform is, they create a list that is absolutely opposite of the Bush policies, yet they support Bush. Yes means no, up is down.

4. Domestic Policy, Subsection (a), taxes:
Here's how I see this particular spectrum....

Far Left: Tax corporations at 80-90%, eliminate taxes for 90% of the people (everybody but the wealthy).
Left: Tax corporations much more than individuals, tax the wealthy much more than the poor.
Center Left: Tax corporations and individuals equally, with slightly progressive rates for both.
Center Right: Tax corporations lightly, tax individuals equally
Right: Don't tax corporations, tax individuals equally
Far Right: Remove taxes, and the government programs that justify them

Of course, there are lots of different positions, on lots of issues, with different people claiming different stakes. On UHC, for example, I saw one poster insist that anything other than single-payer, state-run, medicine was "center right". I'd see multi-payer universal insurance as "left", so obviously there's lots of room for interpretation.

7. Please, explain how any kind of for-profit insurance is 'left'.
Making it "universal" doesn't move it left - all it does is expand the profit base.

Enlighten me.
