A question to those discussing Caroline Kennedy and the NY Senate seat.

I am from Mississippi and I'd love to have her as my Senator.

I read that polls in your state want Andrew Cuomo instead, but he can best serve your state by remaining your AG, where he seems to be the kind of bulldog you need to keep your criminals in line.

Why did so many people want Obama for President?

Because he wasnt considered an "experienced" politician (read, already corrupted by government service) having been in the Senate for two years.

Smart is more important than government experience (look at your own senior Senator for an example), and combine smart with the name recognition from being a Kennedy and you will have the best of all worlds with Caroline.

6. Have not involved myself too much because I'm not from (or in) NY. But, my daughter lives in Harlem

so I have a tangential connection.

That being said, is there anyone here who thinks that Caroline Kennedy would not be a Senator who supports almost all of the sometimes-denigrated "liberal agenda?" Maybe it is her family history of PUBLIC SERVICE that convinces me. Maybe it is feeling like I have "known" her since she was a little girl in the White House.

For someone about whom I admittedly know relatively little, issue-wise, I am more than willing to trust that she will support my views on issues. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. I also think a year-long tenure before having to run in 2010 (and then again in 2012) will be enough to accurately assess her performance.

9. Exactly my thoughts! I lived in NY for 15 years, both in NYC and in Westchester Co.

My son is a senior prosecutor at the Brooklyn D.A.'s office. I go to NYC often on the train from here in New Haven.

I feel, as you do, certain that she is on my wave length with regard to the issues. And, of course, I am old enough to remember her as a 3 year old in the White HOuse. My first vote in a presidential election was for JFK.

Like you, I would like to see her have a chance to prove herself. We will know more, as you so wisely point out, in 2010.

I'm okay with Caroline but would prefer Andrew Cuomo or even his father who could be a placeholder and let it be a true open election in 2010. I really wanted Nita Lowey or RFK, Jr but they both withdrew their names or asked not to be considered.

FYI, I think it's legitimate for non-NY DUers to discuss Kennedy, as it may be her intention to use the seat as a stepping stone to other things.

12. I consider myself a Californian, but

I was born in Buffalo, lived there for almost 20 years, all my family are still there, and I spend 2-4 weeks there a year. IOW, I'm more familiar with that part of the state than Kennedy (or most state-wide NY politicians, for that matter). Also lived in the Hudson valley and worked in Manhattan, but I don't think myself particularly informed about those areas.



ETA: I opposed Robert Kennedy's senate run back in 1964, but as I said in another post, most people don't pay attention to pre-teens' political opinions.

But my support for CK is based on my view that she will be an asset for the Democratic party. She proved with her endorsement of Obama and the positive reaction which it evoked that she has some clout and that will be an asset for other Democrats running for election/reelection. Put another way, and I don't mean this as a slight to Jerry Nadler who is a fine congressman -- if you were runing for election/reelection to the Senate from somewhere in the midwest, who would you want to make a joint campaign appearance with -- Jerry or Caroline?
