WASILLA -- A 42-year-old Wasilla woman was arrested Thursday at her home by Alaska State Troopers with a search warrant in an undercover drug investigation. Sherry L. Johnston was charged with six felony counts of misconduct involving a controlled substance.

Johnston is the mother of Levi Johnston, the Wasilla 18-year-old who received international attention in September when Gov. Sarah Palin and her husband, Todd, announced their teenage daughter was pregnant and he was the father. Bristol Palin, 18, is due on Saturday, according to a recent interview with the governor's father, Chuck Heath.

Troopers served the warrant at Johnston's home at the "conclusion of an undercover narcotics investigation," said a statement issued Thursday by the troopers as part of the normal daily summary of activity around the state.

Troopers charged Johnston with second-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance -- generally manufacturing or delivering drugs -- as well as fourth-degree misconduct involving controlled substances, or possession.

21. of course you grow weed but you are charged under the provision
of manufacturing a controlled substance.

Don't get me wrong, I do not like Palin's kind of politics, but she never hid the fact that she used to smoke cannabis herself with her husband and that such an activity was legal according to the law of the state she lives in. So if this is just weed growing then the hypocracy link is not too strong. If the drug is indeed meth (something I think should be legally produced by people in industrial areas, taxed, and purity regulated) then I can understand the argument that the woman is not a wholesome mother because in my mind selling meth or tobacco is terrible as you sell stuff that is really bad for the health of the users. (once again I think sale of these things should be legal for harm reduction and to not support organized crime, but I think you can make the argument that selling really addictive drugs is immoral. That is why I even support the idea of the state selling hard drugs for a zero profit margin. )

25. what about harm reduction
to reduce the risk of OD as well as minimize the negative effect upon health of the addicts the state can produce and sell the drug for no profit. This also takes the money out of organized crime. They do this with heroin in Switzerland and the Netherlands.

58. yes I am
I live in a world in which non purity regluated drugs cause more harm than purity regulated drugs. People use drugs whether they are legal or not and the harm to users and society can be reduced in a regulated market, by having the government sell the products to break even you take out the financial incentive for selling the illegal variety. You reduce the number of meth labs in residential areas to near zero, establish a legal market, fight organized crime, reduce money laundering, and reduce the harm done to users (impurities cause unnecessary harm). I do not know what world you live in.

67. there may actually be method to his madness...
if meth and coke and heroin were legal and freely available, just think how quickly we'd rid ourselves of junkies from overdoses- hell we'd even get rid of some of the weak-willed losers who might never have tried it on their own if it hadn't been freely available- think of it as "culling the herd"...more jobs and opportunities for the rest of us...YAY!

and it would probably be a lot easier to get national single-payer healthcare enacted once all the junkies were dead.

i say we go for it.

i even have an idea to speed up the process- once they're in the government-owned clinic, and have signed the liability release, and are good and fucked up- tell them that once they leave, they don't get any more- ever. that should take care of most of the cokeheads, a good share of the junkies, and ALL of the tweakers.

76. Where would this rush of new addicts come from?
People who do not use meth today would suddenly want to use it because it is legal even though they know it to be highly addictive? No, people with self destructive personalities would use hard drugs to destroy themselves as they are already doing. Who in your entourage would start using hard, addictive drugs were they legal? Do you think your entourage is somehow superior to the majority of entourages in the USA?

Did you ever consider that prohibition does more harm than good. As a result of prohibition Orgaized crime flourishes, drugs cost an exagerated price so users are often pushed to petty crime to support their habits. Users OD because they do not know the strength of what they get. Users have health problems due to impurities. Add in the murders related to the drug trade and the murders related to the importation of drugs and you have a whole lot of nasty shit related to prohibition.

Is there even any evidence that prohibition reduces use?

Compare the rate of cannabis and heroin use in the USA with that of the Netherlands where cannabis is sold in for profit stores and heroin is given to addicts in goverment sponsored shops.

88. I think you are very mixed up
Organized crime will always find ways to make money. legalizing dangerous drugs isn't the answer. You want to legalize one substance then they will sell another. There will be enough curious teenagers who would try Meth or another dangerous drug if it was legal. More than if it stays illegal. There is ethics involved too. I don't want to pay taxes to a government that helps out junkies. Your whole premise is flawed.

74. legal drugs equals less overdoses
people overdose because they do not know the strenght of the products they get. People can live to their eighties as hard drug users so long as they know their doses and they have pure gear. Instead of encourging them to die why not let them contribute to society as any alcoholic is free to do. This idea is not my own, it is being implemented in other countries such as Switzerland, Canada, and the Netherlands, mostly for heroin for the momement. The goverment sells the drugs and gives clean needles, disease and overdose are reduced.

Don't forget that heroin, cocaine etc. were all legal up until about a hundred years ago.

87. bullshit. the easier they are to obtain, the more people that woukld try them,
and the more people that would then overdose.
i also realize that opiates are generally a fairly safe class of drugs when taken properly- but taking them properly does not include doing so to get a high. i've been taking 70mg of methadone daily for over 10 years due to chronic pain, and i'll probably be taking it for the rest of my life. i'm most likely "addicted" to it- but it doesn't get me "high", and i have no intentions of ever stopping taking it.

If this was Obama and his family they'd be call Levi "babby daddy", calling Bristol a "nappy headed ho", connecting the whole family to street talk.

Yet they deny everything about the Palins, Sarah's affair (it was never denied, no suit brougt to the enquirer) the firing of the trooper, riding on a plane after her water broke, Bristol's pregnancy, the kids dropping out of school, the clothes money, the whole makeover of the family right down to dressing Levi, changing Todd's hair, even the little one's (forgot her name) new clothes.

And they STILL hold her up as the greatest example of conservative family values.

Every family has problems, but I can't stand the Freepers and conservatives' hypocrisy.

Also yes, if it is meth I am ok with it. I would prefer that you would make meth pills in labs like in Europe and Asia but under prohibition you are more likely to get bath tub meth. At any rate if people want speed why should I care if they do coke, meth, caffine pills, or red bull? People should be free to live their lives. I have managed to turn out ok and I have used cocaine, cannabis, MDMA, mushrooms, LSD, opium, tobacco, and alcohol at various points in my life.

millions of people, like president elect Obama, have used many drugs at some point in thier lives and are still productive. You do not want a meth head driving a bus so make it illegal to drive under the influence. Prohibition is not stopping people from getting meth, they are just getting shitty, impure smokable meth instead of pure pills. The impurities are terrible for their bodies. Were drugs legal people would have pure drugs, the mob would make less money, and banks would launder less money.

Prior to 1914. Actually, it wasn't much of a problem until the "wrong people" started using it. Funny how that works.

We now have a world with Colombian paramilitaries and violent Mexican drug cartels grown fat off prohibition, street-corner turf war shootings, and half a million people in prison on drug charges. How's that working?

meth and coke would be cheaper if legal, so petty theft would not really go up, if the use of speed increased then yes there may be an increase in certain kinds of violent crime, but others, like the robbing and shooting of drug dealers, turf wars, this violence would go down, also extortion of drug dealers, the paying of the cops by dealers etc. would go down.

78. drugs would be cheaper
if they were sold for no profit by the government. The price of drugs is inflated due to the risk involved in producing, importing, and selling them. This part of the profit would vanish with legalization. Also as far as cocaine goes many successful people manage to use cocaine without giving up their families and jobs.

Think about it. Why do people use shitty quality meth? They want speed, a rush. Cocaine is too expensive so they go to meth, which happens to be very impure in the USA. Were cocaine legal it would be cost competitive with meth. Meth is more addictive than cocaine.

Also do not forget that people have a right to destroy their lives by using alcohol. They should have the same right to destroy their lives as they see fit by using any drugs or huffing gasoline if they want to.

90. the government would never sell drugs for no profit- it's insane to think they would.
the market price is already set- they know how much people are willing to pay to get their high. so- the difference between the 'street price' and the price to produce would be made up of taxes to counter the costs of the effects that drug use would have on society- plus anything else that could be funded with the leftovers from that.
there's NO WAY that the government would be so stupid as to give away for free something that people are willing to pay so much to possess.
did you skip history and economics BOTH?

85. Because the price is heavily inflated due to the risk
Drugs are not expensive to grow/process. But the risks involved with being shot in a gang or cartel war and the possibility of being caught and going to prison makes the price of drugs go up since few people are willing to assume the risk. If it is legal then such risks are eliminated.

91. what about paying for the societal costs of legal drugs..? for starters.
the price that people are willing to pay for drugs has already been set by the black market. if by some bizarro-world twist the government were to get into the business- it would make up the difference between the cost of production and the street price with taxes equal to or ABOVE the profits currently taken by the criminal element.
and once there was NO black market, they could charge whatever they want.

I am far from knowing anything about 2nd/3rd/4th degree charges but this is what was in the Wasilla area paper:

http://frontiersman.com/articles/2008/12/21/local_news/doc494ddfb19daa3041809345.txt

42-year-old Wasilla woman was arrested Wednesday on drug charges.

Sherry Johnston, mother of Levi Johnston, boyfriend of governor Sarah Palin’s daughter Bristol, was out on $5,000 bond as of Friday.

Alaska State Troopers say she was arrested during an undercover investigation and that they are charging her with three counts each of second- and fourth-degree drug misconduct. The third-degree charges are generally reserved for those caught distributing drugs.

---------
Guess we will know more when it is leaked or come Jan 6th court date.
Googling 4th degree drug charges and the word Alaska, others have been caught selling drugs an been charged with 4th degree, so who knows...

------------

Lovely little place, Wasilla is..it's amazing their brains are not all fried:

From 2006:
http://dwb.adn.com/news/alaska/story/7431895p-7342785c.html

Agents of the Mat-Su Narcotics Unit intercepted 7 ounces of Mexican heroin bound for Wasilla and delivered it themselves Tuesday, along with a search warrant.

With one swipe, they grabbed more than 10 times as much heroin as was confiscated all last year in Alaska, said Alaska State Troopers spokesman Greg Wilkinson. In 2005, troopers had two seizures of heroin totaling 18.8 grams, or 0.658 ounces, he said.

At the home, police found small amounts of drugs: trace amounts of heroin, 3 grams of cocaine, an ounce of marijuana. Police also reported seizing digital scales, drug paraphernalia and packaging material.

A warrant was already out for Jorgenson's arrest on a prior charge. The narcotics team on Wednesday added second- and fourth-degree drug misconduct and driving on a revoked license. He was jailed at the Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility in lieu of $25,000 bond.

38. can we say it NOW?
White trash and as Jon pointed out, grifters.

My parents lived in Alaska in the 50s, in fact I was born there, they say the population was mostly made up of rugged individualists. There was no religious presence to speak of.

We've been back since and keep in touch with some friends and what shocked us the most was the influx of right wing religion and instead of being rugged individualists, they became religious, provincial, hillbillies. There are still some wonderful people up there but some of the population went south if you know what I mean.

and it's something of a stretch to assume that Palin knew anything of this (it's a possibility, but assumptions about possibilities are often misleading). I don't hold Bristol Palin or Levi Johnston responsible for their parents' shortcomings.

To be frank, I'm not seeing any real hypocrisy...I wouldn't expect 99.9% of GOPers to know what Palin's daugheter's boyfriend's mom does on the sly. Roger Clinton's a bit of a fuckup too but we don't hold that against Bill.

Palin soap opera: Drug in Levi's mom's case is oxycontin

More Palin family trouble: Levi's mom's been arrested

By Zaz Hollander | Anchorage Daily News

WASILLA, Alaska — Wasilla resident Sherry L. Johnston, mother of Bristol Palin's boyfriend,
faces a Jan. 6 court date for an oxycontin-related arrest at her home by Alaska State Troopers.

Little additional information was available Friday on the case as authorities remained unusually
tight-lipped about details. But Palmer court records listed Johnston's scheduled court date and
a troopers spokeswoman said in a release late Friday afternoon that the charges "are in relation
to the drug oxycontin."
