Based on my experience last night, one is shown to be a a bigoted homophobe unless he or she:

1) Believes Rick Warren is worse than Hitler.

2) Thinks Obama can never be trusted again if he allows Rick Warren to speak.

3) Cuts out of his/her life everyone he/she knows who does not show 100% support for gay marriage (including those who support civil unions).

4) Believes that anyone who does not show 100% support for gay marriage (including those who support civil unions) are in exactly the same category as those who still advocate for separate drinking fountains for African Americans.

I think Obama made a mistake but I still like him and want him to succeed as our president. Some of the posts here border on total mocking on both sides. Who feel that supporting civil unions that provide the same benefits and rights as marriage is not a betrayal of gay rights. I tend to disagree with that. But, I would not call those people "bigots" or put them in the same category as the KKK. Honest people can disagree about whether or not the word "marriage" is non-negotiable.

Here is what I know:

I worked my way through school. Nothing was handed to me.

I am 45 and was laid off from a company in which the CEO made $67 million last year.

I pay twice the car insurance rates as folks in the suburbs -- some of whom live only a few hundred yards from my own house.

My IRA is worth half what it was last year because a bunch of greedy bastards and incompetent government regulators fucked over the economy.

I have faced injustice on the basis of my working-class background and, recently, age discrimination on the job (most of the folks laid off were over 40).

I have lost out on jobs and promotions in the past because I was overweight.

There are plenty of people who have it better than me.

In some ways, I am still far better off than most people on the planet.

Life is what it is. Where there is injustice, we should fight it. But to claim some kind of moral superiority based on your exquisite victimhood does no good at all. Not for me and not for you.

Trust me, there are plenty of inner-city families whose kids go to school with my son who might think you have things pretty good. I don't know your circumstances. But, I at least know you have a computer, Web access and a good education. You probably don't heat your house with a kerosene heater because the landlord didn't pay the gas bill. You more than likely won't be heading to the food bank in a blizzard today. That makes you "privileged" as well, I guess.

I totally agree that it is an injustice for you not to become legally married to the person of your choice. I argue in favor of gay marriage and vote to support it. I also think you will get that right because, in the end, it is what you deserve.

But this whole "you're with us or against us" dogma and your intolerance of any shade of grey that does not match your opinion -- it does not advance your cause in the real world.

I provided the list to show that I am not privileged. Even though I am far better off than, say, the typical resident of Darfur, I would not call myself exactly a silver-spoon kid. But, despite all of the things I listed, I don't slap the "victim" label on myself, either. We all have our crosses to bear.

I think there is a difference between saying that a POLICY (civil unions) is a form of soft bigotry and saying that everyone who supports it is a flat-out bigot.

And and I stated above, equal rights for gay people includes equal access to full legal marriage for same-sex couples. I assert that anyone on DU who has denounced equal marriage for gay couples, who have insisted that Jim Crow marriage substitutes are a good thing, do NOT support equality for GLBT Americans. Likewise, any member of DU who defended the Proposition 8 vote in California, or who told us to "get over it" when it passed or otherwise got pissy at our outrage over it.

Far more likely, those who do oppose equality simply will not respond.

But it doesn't matter how people vote, or if they like gays, or blacks, or women - it's a civil rights issue, and if you believe in the Constitution, then you support equal rights for gay people.

It is a civil rights issue that affects each and every one of us. If they can ban same-sex marriage, what would be next? If they start deciding that gay people cannot be parents, who will they decide can't be parents next time? Single people?
