When you fill out on an application Miss. Ms. or Mrs. there is a reason behind it and it doesn't have to do with what name you use.

I've never known a woman who uses her own name with the title Mrs. ~ for many, the point of using your own name is NOT to use a title based on marriage status.

Ms. is used to designate that one's married status is not pertinent; it is the female equivalent of Mr.

50. you are actually wrong about that. That *WAS* once the way...in like 1952
but there was a USSC ruling on the matter and it's this: Women are all Ms. It had something to do with a woman having to reveal personal information about herself vis a vis just for being a Miss to a Mrs (or "Ms" if'n she were divorced) It's Ms. all around now (personal preferences aside, some women choose to be Mrs, and that's up to them, but Ms. belongs to every LayDee.

Ms. is the modern title for either, the non-sexist equivalent of Mr.

But I've never known a woman who kept her own name and then chose to use Mrs.

She probably wanted to keep her Kennedy connection. I doubt it was about not taking her husbands name or she wouldn't have changed it.

55. It's all semantics games those with too much time on their hands like to play. I use "Miss" with
women I know to be unmarried, and have never in my life heard a single complaint about it. I use "Ms" with those who self-state that is how they are addressed, of course.

Of course, most of the women I work with go by the title "Dr.," so that's the title I use the most in any event.

28. You misunderstand the purpose of the honorific Ms.
I am aware that many if not most do not understand the intent. I have been told by some that Ms.identifies if a woman is divorced, which is exactly opposite of the very reason it was created. It's purpose was to not identify a woman by her marital status but to match Mr. - which in no way tells you if the man you are referring to is married or unmarried. It evidently failed in achieving this. You are correct as there is a difference between Mrs. and Ms. in that a woman who chooses to refer to herself as Mrs. wants to tell the world she is married versus a woman who uses Ms. who does not (or should not).
