What is the deal with Melissa Etheridge?

I've been studying for the past couple of days, so somebody tell me what this is all about.

1. She signed a book for Rick Warren at a chance meeting, Allegedly, this proves that Obama should

appoint Rick Warren to be a special liason to the GLBT community or some such nonsense.

I was told that Warren's friends among the MPAC Muslim community had urged him to call Melissa Etheridge Friday night in the run-up to their being (serially) on the same stage Saturday night, and that he did so and they talked for half an hour. During his address, Warren mentioned also seeing Etheridge backstage on Saturday.

Local television in Los Angeles showed a short clip of Etheridge after the event asking gay leaders to reach out to Warren, just as they wanted him to reach out to them.

3. Hell, I was just out shoveling snow and I missed it! However, I got help.

There are several posts you can click on right now on GD and GDP. Basically, there is no real issue. The issue is whether people are going to react as strongly to this incident (Warren asked her to sign her latest album and she did and they had a "nice" conversation) as folks did with Obama asking Warrent to give the invocation at his Inaugural. The issue is also the "tone" of making this appear to be an issue.

9. Ashling, you might want to get up to speed on the latest issues.

Basically, there's been some rough waters about GLBT issues, as a result of the Warren kerfluffle.

Pizza delivery is on the rise, and Skinner (etc.) came down with a pretty straight forward statement (paraphrased): If you want to remain on DU, supporting gay marriage (with civil unions as an intermediate step, but not acceptable as a final step) is one of our community positions, and gay-bashing bigotry will not be tolerated.
