But we should all be offended that he picked such a homophobic (among other things) bigot to give the invocation.

34. Whatr on earth makes you think that? Because they voted for him anyway, like we heteros begged
them to do? What were their realistic alternatives? McCain Palin? Most everyone here knew Obama's positions very well. Does that mean we can never criticize him for his positions? What is your point?

16. Obama isnt anti gay
“While we have come a long way since the Stonewall riots in 1969, we still have a lot of work to do. Too often, the issue of LGBT rights is exploited by those seeking to divide us. But at its core, this issue is about who we are as Americans. It’s about whether this nation is going to live up to its founding promise of equality by treating all its citizens with dignity and respect.”

— Senator Barack Obama

That bigot is still american and he has to be a president to all people. I honestly thing its a brilliant move. Any antiObama gay fervor just brings more right leaning people into the obama fold. The gay community isnt NOT going to support Obama in the end so by them screaming it only brings more center rights into the obama camp. win win

The fundies on the right wing love this shit

The left and right been using the gay community as a political tool for generations. Must suck to be be used like that, but reality sucks

Wanna bet there isn't a real possibility that "the gay community isnt NOT going to support Obama in the end"?

43. I may have misread,
I think the poster was asking why the GLBT community didn't express their support for DK as fervently as against the choice of Warren.

My opinion on that is because GLBT wanted someone who could actually WIN...(DK will never be president)...and be in a position to take up the cause.

As offensive as this choice was - to GLBT and women, in particular, (and to liberal people of faith as well) - we have no choice but to continue to believe President Obama will be that someone.

I am desperately hoping that this will prove to have been what I think it is...a huge fucked up mistake. I really don't think it is an indication of how he will govern.

As a legislator, he defends the rights of same sex couples to marry.

40. Sadly, I think you are mistaken. However, it does not matter what he thinks, as long as
he does not believe in interfering with the states. And the real bottom line is what his appointees to the SCOTUS think. For those appointments alone, it was worth every dime of donations and every hour of volunterring to defeat McCain Palin.

26. He will not allow legislation preventing it.
He does not personally believe that marriage as an institution is other than between a man and a woman.

It's the difference between one's personal beliefs and how one legislates.

It's actually a nice example of how a good leader can separate personal feelings from his or her sense of the right thing to do for all people, or to support certain legislation despite a conflict with one's religious beliefs.

The only analogy that comes to mind would be a governor who personally abhors the death penalty signing a capital punishment warrant.

I wish I could think of an example that wasn't so dark.

30. Here's another example for you
a legislator who personally doesn't believe in mixed race marriages but is benevolent enough not to legislate against them.

See? That wouldn't be bigoted at all, it would be an example of an enlightened good leader.

42. Marriage is an issue for the states, not the feds. Further, Presidents don't legislate. Congress
does. Presidents can veto legilslation, though. The most critical thing here are SCOTUS appointments. That is the ball game when it comes to equal rights. And SCOTUS appointees don't have to worry about re-election, like Presidents, Governors and legislators.

48. "I detest the bashing and vilifying of gays" - Barrack Obama
"OBAMA: Well, to answer the original question, I would love that child and seek to support them. ...I detest the bashing and vilifying of gays and lesbians. Most gays and lesbians are seeking basic recognition of their rights so they’re not discriminated against in employment or renting a house, so they can see their partner in a hospital. These are rights for everybody, not just some people.

Source: Illinois Senate Debate #3: Barack Obama vs. Alan Keyes Oct 21, 2004 "

Warren has vilified and bashed gays, comparing same sex marriage to pedophelia and bestiality.

as wrong as the KKK were to burn crosses in many of Michelle Obama's ancestor's yards...

let's get this straight (no pun intended), Obama will regret the day he ever uttered those words because he will feel bad for all the violence this brought onto the LGBT community.

and, therefore, gay marriage . . .

and maybe one of the best uses of our time and energy in the next few months could be educating him about both topics and why it is so important that he understand them better . . .

and maybe we should also emphasize that, even if his religious beliefs cause him to personally oppose gay marriage, those beliefs should be kept out of his public policy considerations . . .

and maybe he'll surprise us . . .
