Hate to piss in the pool here...
... but the challenges facing our country are WAY bigger than our matrimony laws. Let's battle this out some other time and focus on preventing another Depression.

.. but to be honest, if Obama needs to invite some wacko preacher to talk for 3 minutes,so that enough right-wingers get the fever and sign up for Universal Healthcare in 2009, then so be it. I think we have someone in Obama who may be the most progressive civil rights President in several generations- if we let him. He is a CONSTITUTIONAL LAW SCHOLAR, remember?

28. That's what is so puzzling...
Prop 8 was supported by Rick Warren..

Prop 8 was an amendment to the State Constitution that removed rights held by citizens...

Obama was opposed to Prop 8. Because he is a Constitutional Law scholar...

I'm missing something.

22. Yes, why obama would purposely divert attention away from the other stuff is a mystery.
Edited on Sun Dec-21-08 11:56 PM by John Q. Citizen
We have the "separate but equal"

the FISA flip flop, the humans rights confused with human opinion, and putting the spotlight on a bigot for the greatest show on earth.

So what the hell do you really think is happening, I mean over with the depression stuff? Are they trying to pull a fast one and get better organized so that we can't fight back enmasse when the food riots start and we don't have any rights at all?

Don't worry, Human rights is the basic foundation of everything else.

That's why the first 10 in the constitution are called the bill of rights and they don't deal at with the depression. Don't forget that!

Making a stink is actually good now that I think about it because it means more press for this, which means more RW nuts will think Obama is OK because of Warren, opening up the doors to filibuster proof legislation....

50. So what happened to the depression? Gone with the wind? Or are you back on
the illusory unfilibusterable kick?

Feinstien, Baucus, Lieberman, or lots of people can and will make a non-filibusterable Senate a pipe dream.

More likely than a non-filibusterable Senate would be martial law. fast and efficient. He's signaling an erosion of human and civil rights. Where does that usually end?

He's got all the traditional and supersized power bush has now. In a couple of months we will see if someone voluntarily cedes power or not. My guess is no. And what's the point of having power if you don't use it? some one will be urging him to.

I think it's important to push and stress civil and human rights. Always. Other wise the other problems become completely unsolvable.

30. Generally when people preface a remark along the lines of "hate to say this"
they really don't.

It is not about gay marriage so stop trying to say it is.

It is about the honoring of a bigot, a misogynist, and a crusader with an eleventh century mentality.

The fact that many in the GLBT community have stood up and said hell no speaks more to their devotion for basic civil rights for all than many give credit for.

I think that the Obama administration can multi-task. They'd better be able to, the economic situation is one of many other grave problems.

A country that won't even extend basic human rights to a minority group is probably not going to be very successful facing any other challenges.

84. equal rights is the only issue
Rights denied to any of us threaten the rights of all of us. The fight for equal rights and justice for any of us is the fight for equal rights and justice for all of us.

There is no bigger challenge facing the country.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all are endowed with equal rights, and that the only purpose of politics and of government is to secure those rights, to fight for justice that would otherwise be denied. At the root of all of the problems the country faces is injustice, and human rights denied is the injustice from which all tyranny and suffering and social ills - including economic depression - arise.

These self-evident truths are the foundation stone of justice, and justice is the foundation stone of the human community. This is not some window dressing to be added later when it is more convenient.

There is no such thing as a "progressive" agenda that leaves some behind, regardless of the pretext being used to leave them behind.

We'd like your support so this WILL go away quicker - but if you don't want to give it, please, focus on the issues you wish to talk about, not spend precious time challenging and starting extra fires telling people to stop being upset over what is upsetting them. 87. But I'm gonna pull out my wanker and let fly anyway
That about sum it up?

See, all this hullabaloo is about something Obama actually DID. You can't say he doesn't have time for it, he did it. I personally find it quite insulting that Warren is getting honored in this fashion, but deeper down I am concerned that this may say something about Obama and how he will handle issues like Gay Marriage. It's true that we face a tremendous economic crisis, but how will you feel when he consults heavily with Henry Paulson in trying to find answers? You like that sort of "inclusion"? How about having Ben Stein come in to advise on teaching science to our students, or Ron Paul on how to fix Social Security?

Yeah, I know, Warren is just giving an invocation. It's ceremonial, has nothing to do with policy. That's fine, but it's also a bit like me inviting Dick Cheney to say a few words at my next family reunion. Might not mean anything per se, but sure would raise a few eyebrows, don't ya think?

Ever notice that the people who are less concerned about the economy are people who don't give a damn about those who are suffering as a result of it?

Look at all the gay marriage posts, and compare that number to the number of posts in the Poverty forum of DU.

The lack of interest in the poverty/economic issue here on DU makes me want to vomit.

91. Yeah, because gays have higher incomes and no kids, right?
Scuse me, but I haven't been able to work in my field (where I was quite successful till fairly recently) in quite some time, had to move across the country to take care of a family matter among Southern Baptists, lost my business, my stuff, my equipment, all my money in the process, and they don;t "do" my field in this market, so I'm completely fucked, or, perhaps, "I've fallen and can't get up," so of course I and many like me "don't care about the poor," eh?

I AM the fucking poor, my dear, and I will not be lectured by someone who has no concept of current reality. That OK with you?

96. Ever since I joined DU in 2003, much of my focus has been on...
Edited on Mon Dec-22-08 05:53 AM by AntiFascist
the effect of the Religious Right and neoconservatives on our current government. It may not seem obvious, but much of what as happened to our economy is a direct result of their influence. If you want to solve poverty you need government programs that make good use of our tax dollars. Unfortunately much of that has been squandered on incredibly expensive and illegal war. The economy was propped up during most of the Bush admin by an artificial housing boom, but now that is collapsing and we are seeing the result.

What does Warren have to do with all this? The gay marriage issue is nothing more than a hook to get evangelicals involved. One of Warren's primary agendas, according to a recent interview on NBC, is to convince his following that the problems with the economy lie with them (and consequently not with our leadership). According to Warren, one problem with gay people is that they lack the ability to delay gratification. This is precisely, according to Warren, the problem that has spread to greater society and is part of the cause of our economic downturn. This is also explained in the book that he has been promoting with his free airtime.

I hope this helps to pursuade you that there is much more to Warren than meets the eye, and much of it does indeed relate to economic issues. You can call me a conspiracy theorist, but if the leaders of their movement had their way, there would be no civil rights and the rest of us would be economic slaves living in poverty.

the threat is the effect of what Warren will push and what he's up to - and you nailed it - if they had their way - most people would be without rights and we'd be living in poverty.

Here's the thread about Warren's P.E.A.C.E. Plan - http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=8022615&mesg_id=8022615

I'm not going to rehash here what's already been posted in numerous threads. Read some of them instead of just complaining about them. Belittling the issues and those who care about them is cold, meanspirited and unproductive. There is damn little anyone here can do to prevent a Depression, but there is plenty we can and ought to do to further the cause of human rights.

The problems of the economy, health care, and foreign policy are complex and affect everybody's lives profoundly. The solutions are highly debatable.

The question of gay marriage is simple. Treat everybody the same. Nobody's ox is gored. Solution in ten seconds. Finito.

What do you want to do, put it on the back burner until global warming is no longer a threat?
