The selection of two ministers to participate in his inauguration ceremony placed Obama in a difficult position. Having promised a new politics of inclusion during the election, a choice of two left leaning individuals would have opened him up to a charge of breaking his promise in pandering to his base. The right would be pressing related memez for the next four years. Choosing any right leaning individual guarantees someone antithetical to his base as their bound to be against abortion, women & GLBT rights.
This right leaning minister tacitly represents the attitudes of millions of Americans who belong to a religious vein that has condoned slavery and racial repression in the past, but Obama has been explicit in his desire to represent all Americans. Certainly many are completely intractable, however there has been leftward motion in the last few years as evidenced by the latest Newsweek article, new r/w environmental efforts, Obama turnout increase among those of faith and progressive-ish initiatives like those of Warren. Ignoring this constituency is effectively surrendering the ignorant to the traditional currents of bigotry.
Inclusion of a r/w minister gives more moral weight to our and Obamaz condemnations of their deplorable positions and forces a divide in the right between those in favor of exclusion and those of tolerance. Ultimately his inclusion will do no more damage to our causes than Clintonz inclusion of Billy Graham in his inauguration. Movements by neither Gandhi nor MLK were successful by ignoring the bigots, rather by advantageous confrontation. Warrenz selection has enabled us to perform and sharpen priceless attacks on these r/w positions in the MSM and the net which can continue thru the inauguration. A mere coupla points of change in the attitudes of this constituency would have defeated Prop 8 to begin with. Ostracizing and labeling them bigots is not to our advantage.
For these reasons among others I support Obamaz inclusion of Warrenz few moments of generic Christian prayer for our PE and nation in the inauguration. My only issues are that attacks on Obama for this choice and Warren personally are counterproductive to our movement and diminish our message.
Std disclaimer: I'm all for GLBT marriage. Warrenz a deplorable asshole. Also I apologize for any offense while pressing my case on the boards. YMMV. Sorry to kinda ramble and post & run, but a robust zed harvest is impending. BBL.
