not as forceful as some here would want, but i hope it will be read by someone on his team...
Dear Mr. President Elect Obama:
I am so proud that you are going to be the next president of the United States. My husband and I have supported you with money and time and believe that you will stand true to your promise of a better America.
Growing up in poverty during the Reagan years, it seemed my choices were limited. However, like your mother, my mother believed education was the only way to rise out of poverty and she worked like crazy so I could go to schools that prepared me for college. Today, I am the first person in my immediate family to graduate from the university and am even in a professional program to become a veterinarian and infectious diseases researcher.
Why does my personal story even matter? When I heard you speak at the 2004 Democratic convention, it was the first time in my life that I believed in the American dream - that I, too, could partake in that dream - a dream that means equality for all people in this country no matter what color, religion, caste, or orientation. Unfortunately, America still is not true to its promise. Many of my dearest friends are denied the same rights my husband and I have just because they cannot say "I do."
I understand wanting to bring all points of view to the table, but giving Mr. Warren such a high honor as the inauguration prayer gives credence to his espoused beliefs that gays and lesbians are somehow the same as those who sexually abuse children and animals. To me, your choice is no better than inviting someone to speak on a national stage who preaches that people of color are only 3/5th a person.
I pray that you understand why this Warren choice is so upsetting to gays and lesbians and those who love them. I know that what is done is done. Mr. Warren has been invited and he has accepted. However, I hope that you will acknowledge the pain such sentiments he preaches has caused and that you will make equality for all Americans a top priority in your administration.
With utmost respect,
