Poll question: In reference to Gay Rights Issues and the recent passing of Prop 8
Edited on Mon Dec-22-08 02:22 PM by FrenchieCat
How do you feel about the fact that there is a national dialogue going on about Gay Rights as prompted by the Warren Invite?

If you vote "other", please provide what that "other" is.

Thanks.

1. Other:
I don't care what prompted it, I feel that dialogue on the issue helps the community in a long run....

But,

I'm unsure if the divisiveness seen on DU is indicative of the community at large and, if it is, if the harm done might be offsetting the benefits.

The matter is too important NOT to be working for unity, IMO.

2. Well as Skinner kind of alluded to, we should perhaps try harder
to discuss such issues understanding that there can be more than one reasonable way of looking at things, as long as we all support total Equal Rights for the Gay Community.

But I'm looking further than DU...like the fact that even the MSM is discussing what Warren has stated in the past. Even they are covering it in a way that doesn't give Warren a positive spin.

3. Indeed,
It's difficult to say how this is playing in Peoria, and difficult to say to what degree DU represents anything beyond DU.

But I generally think that having the more light shed on the topic is a good thing in the long run, thus my modified version of answer #2.

Happy Holiday Season to ya!

4. and Happy Holidays to you!
And especially after Prop 8, I'm glad that there is an excuse for dialogue....otherwise, it would just have receded into the background.....like it did.

5. I like the dialogue but I think it might have started off a little more productive
if Warren's invite wasn' the catalyst.

6. But then perhaps there wouldn't have been any discussion at all,......
and I'm not talking about on DU, as much as in the big world out there.

7. I understand that
I just don't see an uproar coming from the left and right as a good start. Beyond that, I would have preferred to frame this issue in a religion free manner. I would think it would have been better to talk about this issue, strictly on the basis of civil liberties and rights, rather than throw in religion.

Maybe I am just engaging in some wishful thinking. After all our nation has not progressed to the point where being in favor of gay marriage is not political poison at the national level. Maybe this is the only way to start the dialog.
