Warren removes anti-gay language from website
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/12/23/rick-warren-scrubs-anti-g_n_153068.html

If this is all the uproar accomplished: to make a man ashamed of bashing gays, then it has been worth it. There are many reasons he could have changed his mind, but if somehow the uproar made him a little guilty, and perhaps Obama's invitation made him rethink something, then there's hope for everyone.

:)

2. Scrubbing his website does not mean he's changed his mind.
I am willing to bet that come January 21st it'll be right back up there.

And if you think his brainwashing torture "cure the gay" program will have stopped operating in the meantime, there is a bridge in Hawaii you may be interested in purchasing from me at a steep discount.

10. You may well be right
OTOH when was the last time the Christian Coalition, Focus On The Family, et. al ever felt the need to willingly "scrub" their websites and/or literature? Most of the religious right bigots that I've been aware of have been consistently stubborn enough to avoid even the appearance of being more "moderate" or "mainstream". Say what you will about the really hard-core religious bigots but NONE OF THEM care how crazy or intolerant they look. Maybe Warren is more willing to open himself up to new ideas and beliefs than many of us here give him credit for? Maybe this uproar and/or his association with Melissa Etheridge and Barack Obama has changed him a bit (for the better).

11. when they're invited to the inauguration of a democrat expect them to temporarily
scrub some of the assholery from their web sites.

I do not believe for one second that Warren has changed his mind, no i don't, he's just getting way more national attention now.

34. they do care
The leaders of the religious right very much care that they are not seen as crazy or intolerant. They seek power and wealth, and can only accomplish that by misleading people. I do not see how we can effectively oppose their program if we fail to see that.

This idea that because they have millions of followers - millions of people who have been deceived and misled - and since Obama needs to "be president of all Americans," and since we need to "reach out" to "those people," and since we need to win people over in order to "get the job done," that therefore we must take their lying and manipulative leaders seriously, must parlay and negotiate with them, can only strengthen the religious right and make it less likely that we win any of their followers over.

Yes, we should reach out to their followers, for the purpose of breaking the hold that the leaders off the religious right have over them. That hold is not as strong as many here imagine, as millions of people just rejected the religious right and Reganomics and voted Democratic. One would think to listen to some here that it had been the political Left that had been repudiated and rejected by the election.

Showcasing, legitimatizing and validating the leaders of the religious right has the exact opposite effect that reaching out to their followers would have. Thinking that we are reaching out to the followers by reaching out to the leaders is to strengthen the leaders, to accept that their leadership is legitimate and honest, to aid and abet in the ongoing campaign of lies and manipulation.

12. He's probably looking at this in terms of money (his real god). Think of it
as a corporation looking at a window of opportunity to get more costumers. I don't know how long before he goes back to the same homophobic bullshit. But it does seem that he's looking at the big picture. Which is of course "how can I get richer and fatter?".

7. Yes, he has thought about how to rebrand.
Sorry to be cynical. He is sticking to his guns. Now his line is not that he is "anti-gay". No, now he is "pro-tradition". Anyone who has fought with the "pro-lifers" know how futile this struggle is about to become. Unfortunately. :(

14. AmericaBlog: Warren releases new video accusing gays of being evil
THIS DESERVES IT'S OWN THREAD, but I haven't seen one for it here yet. And don't have a high enough post count to start a thread yet.

In new video, Rick Warren accuses gays of "hateful attacks," "hate speech," "Christ-ophobia," and of being "evil"

Merry Christmas from Rick Warren! You're all hateful, evil, and not even Christian!

Barack Obama's good buddy Rick Warren recorded a video yesterday, talking about the outcry over his being chosen to given the invocation at Obama's swearing in. And it's a doozie. Warren's big mouth, and apparent ego, is pretty much guaranteeing that this controversy will continue all the way up until the inauguration and beyond.

In the new video, Warren accuses gays of "hate speech," of launching "hateful attacks" against him, and he then says that gay and lesbian Americans have "Christ-ophobia," a clear effort to mock the term "homophobia." He goes on to explain that gays are "afraid of any Christian," suggesting that gay and lesbian Americans - gay and lesbian Obama voters - are not Christians. He then goes on to call gays criticizing him "evil." All this from a man who compared gay marriage to incest and pedophilia, and who explicitly bans "unrepentant gays" from his church membership.

(He also adds that bloggers are "rude" and "need to get a life." I don't really care about that part, it's just more evidence that we're getting under Warren's skin, and that he's not quite ready for prime time.)

Now that Obama has tied his horse to Rick Warren, and Warren is now speaking out and accusing gay and lesbian Obama supporters of being hateful, evil, of not being Christians, and of fearing all Christians and apparently Christ himself - mind you, we're told by Obama's pastor friend that we're not really Christian only three days before Christmas - it's time for Barack Obama to answer some questions about the very vocal Mr. Warren.

Does Obama agree with Rick Warren that gay and lesbian Americans have been "evil" and "hateful" in this affair?

Does Obama agree that gay Americans are not Christians?

Does Obama agree that gays have "Christ-ophobia"?

Keep fanning those flames, Mr. Warren.

But now I think he needs to stand up and explicitly say "Rick Warren is full of horseshit and I want him fucking gone" - or, you know, however Obama would phrase it.

Thanks for the mind-change.

30. He didn't remove it because of guilt or a change of heart.
Edited on Tue Dec-23-08 03:17 PM by lwfern
The new video is pretty clear - he removed it because he's been "victimized" and bullied by those evil gays (whose rights he's said Christians "need" to take away).

The only thing he's rethought is how to brand the glbt community as oppressors and himself as the oppressed.

31. double standard
Had Bush chosen Warren for the invocation, and then had Warren removed anti-gay language from his website, our interpretation of that would be the exact opposite of what you are saying here. We would all see it as a cynical move, as an attempt to hide the true agenda, not as evidence for some change of heart.
