Well, there are two sides to every story...

http://www.bilerico.com/2008/12/that_weird_hug_from_rick_warren.php

an excerpt:

Eventually, I heard Warren call out my name. As I turned to greet him, he hugged me, my partner, and our three children . . . and then walked away. No conversation. Minimal eye contact. Just an awkward hug and he was gone.

The following day we tried to initiate heartfelt conversation with the four Saddleback staff members who managed to show up. From the opening moments it was clear that this was a meeting to save face without any real interest in hearing our stories or getting to know us.

2. Warren's PR machine is very good.
My rule of thumb right now is to fact check EVERYTHING that comes out of it.

Check it out for yourself. He issues a statement, and if you search it, it's PLASTERED all over the internets.

This is hardball.

with these mega-pulpit preachers: they see it as THEIR church. Unless Warren is the one who was crucified, the church does not belong to him. Small wonder that so many are disgusted with Christianity and churches. All too often, Jesus is nothing more than a come-on to get people in the door (to throw money in the basket), then he disappears from the sermons, replaced by the personality-driven "theology" of the fame/wealth-seeking preacher. Give me the little church on the corner, where you don't have to wear a nametag, and where pleas for time and effort are likely to be more frequent than requests for money.
