I normally detest these commercials which suggest it is a reasonable thing to do to give someone you know a 60,000 to 80,000 dollar luxury automobile as a Christmas gift.

This Christmas it is even more detestable to me being unemployed and having three unemployed friends with our economy in the tank.

This is the ultimate commercialization of the holiday and a terrible display of ostentacious wealth to give your wife or husband or whomever a Lexus or Mercedes with a giant red bow on it in my opinion. It's like the lady who built her dogs a three million dollar dog house that I heard about. Even if I were the receiver of such a gift I would still find it terribly inappropriate.

1. I've always hated them
but I especially hate them this year. I've never known anyone who gave a spouse a new car of any kind (maybe I don't travel in the right circles), but the ads seem especially obnoxious this year, when so many people don't even have jobs or homes.

Hate them.

2. Look at it this way--the advertisers are wishful thinking themselves.

They are spending all these ad dollars, but they probably won't really sell many cars.

Edited to add: The one that really used to annoy me, which they thankfully don't run anymore because it might sound dated if they did, is the one where the parents take the teenage girl out the front door and say something like "Honey, for this Christmas we decided to get you a new CD player"...and there's a Lexus standing in the driveway. The CD player is in the dashboard of the car. Get it? Ha ha. Yeah, like it's really normal for parents to buy their teenage daughter a Lexus for Christmas. Or, for that matter, a car, period.

4. Bottled Wealth
They're ads targeted at the people who yanked their money out of the market.

It sure would be nice if the $60K went into micro-loans, to start thousands of new small businesses, though.

11. always hated them
there's an Audi one that makes me even crazier. It's "now you can own the road' and they wrap up pieces of highway. I already see enough Audi drivers driving like they do own the road, and advertising should not be encouraging it.
