Perhaps this is a good thing for the Gay community?
Edited on Wed Dec-24-08 02:27 PM by kevinds13
Sure, Warren is a bigot. Sure it sucks that he is being given a voice at the inauguration. But I hope it hasn't been that long since Prop 8's passing to remember that, while hurting the community in the short run, this will go a long way in changing opinions...

Prop 8 mobilized sensible people everywhere. I truly believe the gay community and their friends and allies added to their ranks in the days of discussion following the vote and I think gay marriage is actually closer to becoming reality than farther away (the way Prop 8's supporters wished it to be).

This Warren debacle has only added to the conversation. Reasonable people do not believe homosexuality is on the level of pedophilia and incest.

Rather, normal everyday people are recognizing that there isn't much difference between them and the gay community.

While, of course, Prop 8 and Warren's invocation are horrible setbacks, we must realize that the louder the conversation gets, the better it is for the overall community.

Backbiting and sniping won't work, but diligence will.

1. I agree. The dark cloud of Warren obscures a silver lining.
The uproar is good and necessary. ( And inevitable, BTW). OTOH, it's not the proverbial hill, imho, that I think GLBTs wish to die on. The rhetoric from some on our side is getting a little apoplectic. This is not worth leaving the party... or even DU... over, imo.

Too many practical difficulties, in the first place. Example: who's gonna be around to raise hell and apply pressure over the next four years?

3. Yeah, the Holocaust was really good for the Jews, when you think about it.
I mean they got their own country out of it, didn't they?

5. Oh, come on. That is offensive
Whatever you think of him or Obama's decision to have him give a prayer at the inauguration, do not equate a two-minute prayer with the slaughter of 6 million innocent people.

6. Those 6 million people didn't just die overnight, ya know

There had to be a culture of bigotry & hatred built up first to the point when even when people were rounded up and jailed, and eventually killed, a lot of people didn't give a shit.

Warren and Phelps may not have Adolf's body count, but hate is hate. And when hate is accepted, history proves that it WILL be taken to the extreme.

9. The point went way over your head.
Clearly, Warren's bigotry is NOT being accepted. His invocation has brought people to the side of the gay community. His invocation has brought gay plight to America's consciousness.

To equate the prayer to the Holocaust not only misses the boat, it is a horrible injustice to both feelings and reason.

4. That's why we should be mobilized and speak out...

not allow others to put us in our place.

8. disagree
what will happen is obama and his people will continue to play it down, those who feel it's best never to question to obama will play it down, all resulting in warren looking palatable and mainstream.

he will say his prayer and it will be inoffensive and touchy-feely and then everyone will go their separate ways thinking, "well he's not so bad" and warren will go back to preaching his bigotry with all of the public acceptance of the well-dressed, well-groomed racists of the 60s.

and gays will continue to decry the injustice they face and others will continue to tell them to shut up and sit down.

10. The whole "Obama apologist" meme is ridiculous.
People may be saying that there are more important issues (economy, war, etc.) and people may be saying its just a prayer.

But the fact remains that Warren's invocation has strengthened the voice for gay rights by awakening even moderates to join the fight for equal rights.
