Do you ever feel like you are in the movie "Groundhog Day" when you come here to DU?
Clearly the GLBT community has just cause to be upset but ranting about it here over and over again everyday to the DU community which is by and large on their side already changes nothing - it just creates Warren fatigue...

Why not take this rant to the local LTTE or Op-Ed section instead or take it to Barack Obama's transition website or protest it on inauguration day? i.e. if you'll pardon the pun "preach" to the unconverted on this please... As for Warren speaking at the Inauguration, as much as I dislike the choice, it's clearly over - the decision's been made and Obama is sticking to it. One thing is for certain: You aren't going to change it by protesting here.

There are plenty of problems in the world and Ric Warren speaking at the Inauguration is just but one of them. Can we finally change the subject please? (And this goes for previous prolonged topics like Hillary as SoS, Blago, and Caroline in the Senate too...)

...

if we could just change the subject then we could stop asking to do so.. Actually this is the first time I've asked to change the subject but I think after a whole week of this we all get the argument and every nuance...it's a dead horse yet DU'ers keep beating it as though it might suddenly get back up..

from four hurricanes here.

Our generator was not working, so we didn't even have a fan. I had bread dough in the freezer... It exploded. By the time we had power back so I could clean it up, it was like dried glue...

I hope you are able to find a job that won't quit on you (and that pays a living wage) ASAP. Living in the tourist driven world has its very scary economical moments.

we didnt lose power AT ALL. It flickered all of 1 time. I still dont know how that happened. People on either side of us - downtown Dover on one side - grocery stores on the other - they were all without power for days. Somehow, we lucked out.

Did you hear about the guy who got arrested for chasing down a PSNH truck?!

I went without power for a grand total of 22 days in 2004 and 2005 due to hurricanes, but it was hot here (well, not after Wilma). Of course I had water that I could cool myself down with and ice. I can't imagine living with no heat in the cold.

61. Its a real test of willpower. Thats for sure.
We went november to march without heat (gas) - but we still had electricity - so at least we could plug in a space heater... even though we had no hot water. But no electricity - thats a whole different thing. The longest I've gone is three days, in the summer. 80 degrees and 90% humidity. It was hell.

I'd have rather been us with no heat than you without electricity for 22 days. Wow. Goes to show what we all get accustomed to. :hi:

I am sorry if LGBT rights, which are human rights, are so inconvenient. Your complain reminds me of those that harped at the seemingly endless Florida recount in 2000. Well, you know what happened after we "got over it." Tens of thousands dead, two million displaced, a country destroyed and another one bankrupted.

As to Groundhog Day analogy (I love that movie) consider this: Clinton gave us DOMA, we got Prop 8 and Warren's invocation as salt on our wounds. Clinton gave us DADT, and Democratic leaders are now saying that repeal of DADT has been put on the back burner indefinitely.

We have been down this path before!

My point is that there is talking and doing... doing is a lot more meaningful than talking. Moreover talking in cyberspace is usually a lot less effective than talking at someone's door or on TV or radio - particularly when you are talking to a crowd of like minded people who already agree with you.

Protesting is cyberspace is damned near useless and damned near invisible.

It's a meaningless echo chamber if nobody but the already true believers are listening.

Your protest needs to be in public - not in cyberspace.

How is complaining to ME going to change anything?

If you want to make real change, talk to the people who are doing shit you don't like. The collective "you", I mean...

You make a real good point in your OP. Gays need to stop preaching to the choir...i.e. the people at DU who, even though they might not be as outraged as the GLBT community is over Rick Warren, still support their full rights.

What the hell is that going to change?

Not a damned thing.

Nor will refusing to hold an Inauguration party (like I saw one person saying...). Yeah...that'll teach 'em a lesson! :eyes:

Write letters...go on the radio...if they're going to the Inauguration, turn their backs on Warren when he speaks...

Ranting about it here is going to change absolutely NOTHING.

47. I protested publicly
There was no DU at that time. DU was started BECAUSE of the 2000 debacle. I went to the Palm Beach County Municipal Center every day and screamed my brains out. I wrote to my Senators and my Congressman.

And it didn't do any good. The Supreme Court overruled me.

After DU was started, I came here to voice my pain, to share with other like-minded people the agony of our loss.

All your posts are doing is showing everyone how little empathy you have for their pain. Who says they are not also protesting in public? Just because YOU want them to sit down and shut up doesn't mean we all do.

49. Again putting words into my mouth I didn't say.
Nor do you know anything of my "empathy".

As I've said elsewhere in this thread I would LOVE to see a thread on Warren that started:

"Pics of our protest in Milwaukee" or "My LTTE to the Washington Post" or My OpEd in the Houston Chronicle...

THOSE would be politically effective efforts.

What I don't like (and NOT specfically on this topic but generally) are people who think being active in cyber-space really matters a whole hell of a lot or somehow makes up for being active in the real world.

I would argue that if the people you claim are "active" in the real world they'd be talking about THAT instead of giving me the same old same old every single day here trying to convince me of something I'm already convinced of. You don't need to convince ME.. you need to convince the middle third of this country not the progressive third that is already on your side.

Are you serious? I didn't come to DU in 2001 and talk about my protesting of the election, with pictures (for one thing, I didn't take any damn pictures. I was ANGRY and left the camera at home). I came here to talk about the LOSS. Did you even READ what I wrote?

I came to DU to talk about the LOSS, not about what we had done to try to stop it. It is not for YOU, one lone person posting on this board, to tell others what they are allowed to talk about. It is disgusting to me that you would even post this.

It's OK to talk about protesting Warren. Pictures would be even better. But they can't talk about the LOSS or the PAIN or the feelings of betrayal? You are a piece of work.

complaining is a waste of bandwidth...it doesn't change anything...

PROTEST where it matters - IN PUBLIC not cyberspace if you want to actually change anything and solve problems - don't "complain" to your friends who already agree with you.

You can complain to me forever and nothing will change except that I will get tired of listening to you after a while.

You aren't telling people what you THINK. You are telling them what they can SAY, and what would be acceptable, IN YOUR EYES, for them to post on this topic. You are, in effect, censoring them, while they are just posting. They are NOT telling you what you are allowed to say.

You started this thread, which, in effect, created ANOTHER post about this issue, while saying the whole time that you are tired of people talking about this issue. You are actually baiting people, making a point that YOU are the one that knows what's best for us and for DU.

You just need some attention or something?

75. "I've listened and I've listened and I'm tired of 600 threads clogging up the board on the..."
same topic.

Those are your words, yes? Sounds like you are just tired of reading it, want them to stop posting it and let you have DU your way. That is telling them what they can post and where (I believe you suggested that they should write to the newspaper and leave DU alone, as well)

If DU was actually "the choir", then this wouldn't have been going on as long. The lack of empathy I've seen on DU for the GLBT community has been astounding, and much of it sounds EXACTLY like the "unconverted". And it happens after EVERY election cycle. Find some of the posts from back in 2004 and you will see that this same thing happened (except that Kerry's loss was blamed on gays).

They are NOT preaching to the choir. Use the damned "Hide Thread" feature if you don't want to read it. It was put in for people like you.

with me telling you what you can or can't write. I have no such power. As far as I know only the mods and/or Skinner have that privilege.

and YES - DU IS the choir. If you don't get that then you will never be successful in politics.

Show me where there are more than a handful of pro-Warren threads on this subject if you can. Well more than 90% are "choir" threads.

It IS preaching to the choir and I'm NOT obligated to "hide" threads and I'm certainly entitled to voice my opinion on thread fatigue as I see fit.

84. And I am entitled to tell YOU what I think of your post on "thread fatigue"
Well, I can't tell you exactly how I feel about it because then my thread would be deleted.

I'm not going to go look stuff up for you and post a bunch of links. You should be a big boy or girl now and be able to do it on your own. I did not say you were obligated to hide threads. But neither are we obligated to avoid topics that you don't want to hear anything else about. Every thread has at least a couple people that pop in and say that they don't want to hear anything more about it, that Obama is above reproach, that we shouldn't be upset by his choices. But Obama chose a misogynist anti-Semitic homophobe to do his prayer at the national function. And that pretty much sucks.

I'm not trying to be successful in politics, you idiot. I'm posting on an INTERNET board. But DU is NOT the choir. It's much, much more moderate than it was in 2001.

No, I'm not trying to be successful in politics. I'm trying to change people's minds about a basic civil rights issue. Equal rights for all humans, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender, religion, country of birth, color of skin or any other characteristic is not a political issue. It is a human rights issue.

Edited on Fri Dec-26-08 03:14 PM by ProSense
I remember being lambasted for posting four news items and an opinion piece (five pieces) over a 10-day period on Hillary's impending appointment.

There are more than 600 threads, with more than 25 each by certain posters, on Warren over the last week alone.

111. I do, too!
I no longer check DU everyday, because it's become like a soap opera, with the same things posted over and over - I left for 3 days, came back, and it didn't look any different.

I don't believe that these posts will change anything. I don't agree with the selection of Warren, either, but I am SO tired of coming to DU and seeing "ALL Warren, ALL the time".

I have tons of empathy and compassion, or so I've been told by many people. I have a gay brother whom I love dearly (who, in fact, is not even as outraged as I am over the choice of Warren), and lots of gay friends. I believe in equal rights for everyone. I don't believe that posting the same thing over and over again on a discussion board will do a damn bit of good.

I don't know why Obama made the choice, and he's getting well-deserved flack for it, but it's obvious that he's not going to change his mind. Our voices SHOULD be heard about this, but I think there are many other things going on, as well, and I also agree that people ARE "preaching to the choir" for the most part on here. I don't understand it. We are all on the same side - or most of us, anyway. I am not someone who thinks "gays should just shut up and go away", but I've seen so many people being accused of being that now that I really haven't posted anything in days, but just keep waiting for it to be over.

An Inauguration is a show - it lasts one day. A bad choice was made. I agree, but I would like to see Obama get down to the business of governing, and can't wait to see bush and cheney slink out the door, and nothing is going to take the joy away from that moment for me. I'll skip that part of the Inauguration, the equivalent of turning my back on the idiot Warren, but I am not going to let it spoil the fact that the two men I wanted most to win the election, won, and will begin leading our country on that day.

so I don't really see how it moves anything forward or how you are convincing the already convinced DU community...

I would love to see threads on this subject that said:

My LTTE to the Chicago Tribune...

or

My Op-Ed in the Atlanta Journal

or

My pics of our protest in Atlanta, Milwaukee, etc...

THAT would be far more politically meaningful in terms of convincing the general public or convincing Barack Obama.

Truthfully I don't see Obama changing his choice - the best outcome would be Ric Warren changing his opinion at this point and apologizing for previous comments.

125. The magical step...
is letting people like you know that this is not a small issue and we are not a group that will allow ourselves to be marginalized.

Civil rights movements are not all fought with huge, magnificent gestures. Sometimes they make progress because of a grinding series of small acts. Reminding people like you, who just don't seem to get the bigotry involved in this situation, and who aren't enraged enough to hold Obama accountable, is one of these small acts.

And don't lecture me: People who know me IRL will tell you I work tirelessly on issues in my local community (and not just the gay one, and not just the activist one)>

Now, go and do something productive: Write a letter to Obama telling him that bigotry doesn't belong at a presidential inauguration.

119. I'd rather give Warren only a couple minutes free press vs. hours and hours of free press
Face it.

Warren is going to do the invocation, like it or not at this point, for about two minutes tops.

At this point, replacing him with someone else will cause even MORE free press for him. Discussing how fucked up he (yes, I agree he is very fucked up) just gives him more free press.

Saying Warren is an asshole is like saying Dobson is an asshole. We know. We get it.

I'll be in DC for the Inaugural and will turn my back when he speaks. Hopefully, many more will too.

consider yourself whacked. Walk in lock step, murmur the 'right' phrases, or you're in for a heap of shit. I'm not understanding the way forward other than the annihilation of Rich Warren. Don't ask don't tell, seems to refer to more than gays in the military.

108. Yes it does feel a bit like that.
I was wishing there was an ignore feature that would search for a word in a post and then you wouldn't see it. That way people can post whatever they want but If I'm not interested in reading them I can easily avoid them. I was wishing for that in the primaries as well. I tried ignoring a bunch of the warren messages, and I did, which helped for awhile, but it's no use, there are just too many and I gave up.

I keep saying I am going to take a break from DU until after the inauguration because of all of this, but I keep coming back.

I don't have a problem with people posting whatever they want, but I will say I'm rethinking my method that I read this newsgroup - which is by reading the greatest page because of how long it's been dominated by Warren threads.

Then I turn on Rachel Maddow show tonight and it's a best of show which is one of the first ones after Warren was picked - I can't escape! I think I'll switch to the broadway channel on xm for awhile.

116. Sorry?
I'm sorry, but I don't understand your response.

I don't mind all the posts - people should be able to post whatever they want - and I understand people are upset and that it was a bad choice by Obama. I just wish there was an easy way for me to filter out topics that I am not interested in reading about without affecting anyone else because other people are interested in reading about it and I'm not. Perhaps I should just read late breaking news for awhile - that is mostly what I come here for - news and not read the greatest page for awhile. Actually though I looked tonight and there were more different topics on there. I don't post much - mostly just read.

118. No problem
I am just tired of Warren threads but that is not your problem. Though I think I may have figured out a way to do it - just do a search of the message boards for Warren and then ignore all of those threads. It's sort of a reverse way of doing what I want but hopefully doable.

114. Of course, you could always
just stay away. I mean, if the site bugs you so bad. Why put yourself through it?

I do understand though. Every other thread is a "Let's complain about all these people speaking their minds" or "How dare you have an opinion about Democrats and come to this site to voice it". Golly but all this whining about civil rights and stuff is getting so old. Let's talk a lot more about how cool we are and stuff.

120. If you like Groundhog Day, try renting..
A little movie called Retroactive. It uses a similar premise, I saw it recently and thought it was fun as hell. More of a action/comedy than strictly comedy like Groundhog Day. I know this is a Lounge type response to a non-Lounge thread, but I hope no one minds.

Retroactive's IMDb page:
