14. at this point, I think it would cause more harm than good
For the President-elect, for the gay rights movement and for liberal constituencies in general.

The mime that "Obama caved in" would quickly be picked-up" by most of the pundits and the media thus putting President Obama into the position of having to prove that he is not "controlled by the gays and other liberal groups".

Conversely, if Rick Warren goes ahead and delivers his prayer, President Obama will still have to prove to the gay and liberal constituency that he is concerned about their concerns and interest.

15. Which is why he never will
People forget Obama is super-smart not super-stupid. I'm sure he realizes that he owes one to the gay community now. I bet however he chooses to pay will have a bigger impact than a two minute prayer does.

Maybe Pastor Rick will pray for America's "Christophobic" infidels on inauguration day.

17. unfortunately, a fair number of Americans would agree with Pastor Warren's comments
Edited on Fri Dec-26-08 04:18 PM by Douglas Carpenter
Having lived most of my adult life abroad or in liberal-urbane Americana, I have often forgotten the huge part of America (probably 45% to 55% + -) that would tend to find Rick Warren reasonable in their minds - perhaps not his most extreme comments - but in general.

19. ALL politics in pandering... the question is who does one pander to and how does one slice up the
pandering pie.

From my point of view, the President-elect should have chosen someone else for the invocation. But now that the decision has been made, let the social conservatives have their two minute prayer. Let the liberal constituencies press for concrete measures that will make concrete differences in real peoples' lives. Don't spend valuable political capital over words. Invest that political capital in things that actually matter.

22. Obama will not renounce his choice, but Warren might possibly back out.
I don't think Obama cares about someone's conditional forgiveness and he will do what he believes is best and not be cowered by those who have a negative opinion of what he does. Obama does not do cowering. He will be the president and not a puppet to have his strings pulled or be forced to dance to the shrill tunes of those who disagree.

Didn't we roast Hillary precisely for her inability to admit she made a mistake in voting for IWR? How is the fiasco of the Warren invocation any different?

27. If he does not believe it is a mistake, then why would he admit to it?
Maybe we could just run a DU poll to make all of Obama's choices for him because then he would have a perfect administration. We must remember, Obama is not perfect, only DU in its infinite wisdom.

whether they believe it is a mistake or not? Does this logic also apply to you?

I Obama finds no fault in exhalting an unashamed homophobe, misogynist, and anti-Semite, then it reflects badly on Obama's judgment of character.

37. In the same spirit, I'll forgive the Obama haters.
The ones that over reacted. The hypocrites. The ones that had no problem when other bigots, such as Billy Graham, gave invocations at previous inaugurations. The ones that apparently have no real problem with Warren, as they didn't speak out when other politicians, Hillary Clinton for instance, associated with Warren, and it's clear their real problem is with Obama himself.

I'll forgive them just as soon as they apologize.

As for me ~ an Obama supporter and volunteer in both the primaries and general ~ I believe in the separation of church and state and never thought Billy Graham belonged on the political stage either.

40. Unfortunately, if Warren was dropped, it would create an even bigger stink than it is now
We need to realize that giving Warren more attention than he deserves for what will be a 1:23 prayer that most people won't even give a shit about is only helping him, his career, more hits and exposure on his web site and a lot of free press that he certainly can only enjoy.

Dropping Warren and having someone else (who?) replacing him just stirs up the whole thing more than it deserves.

Let's express our rage, but perhaps not try to act like those on the Right that would rather use censorship and demonizing those they don't agree with...
