Over the last weeks there has been a lot of talk about people cancelling their inauguration day parties, refusing to watch the ceremony, etc. I can't say that I blame anyone for wanting to do this. While I've tried to stay out of the Warren debates, and to maintain a kind of Skinner-style neutrality, there's no denying that the presence of this hateful lardass con man is going to put a damper on the occasion. My head says it's okay to be pragmatic and inclusive blah blah blah, but my heart knows that inviting this POS was a terrible idea that is rightly being viewed as a slap in the face not only to the LGBT community, but to progressives in general. Couple this with a few less-than-stellar cabinet picks, and it's enough to get you discouraged about the likelihood of actual "change."
But I'm not here to talk about that. I'm here to talk about the reason why I'll still be celebrating on Inauguration Day. In case any of us may have forgotten:
On January 20, 2009, the unelected, mass-murdering chimp and his bloodthirsty cabal of human shitstains will no longer be in office.
It doesn't matter who's giving the invocation. It doesn't matter who's taking the oath of office. It wouldn't matter if the U.S. plunged into an anarchic void of leaderless anomie - all that matters is that on January 20, the nightmare is over.
Sure, I'm disappointed in some of Obama's choices. I'm still going to give him a shred of benefit of the doubt until he gets in office at least. But whether you're a hardcore Obama apologist or if you've thrown him under the bus permanently, let's not lose sight of the real reason we're celebrating on January 20.
There is much to do and much progress to be made, and it won't be made overnight. Hopefully we'll live in an age where pandering moves like the Warren pick won't be necessary. But on January 20, let's take a moment to sound the death knell for the era that made this kind of pandering "necessary" in the first place. On 01/20/2009, it's over.
