COOL! Malia Obama's school is LEED Platinum (standard for environmentally sustainable construction)
and quite beautiful in it's design (check out the photos at the link)

Middle School
Sidwell Friends School
Washington, District of Columbia

The Middle School renovation and addition transforms an awkwardly-sited, undersized, fifty-year-old facility into an exterior and interior teaching landscape. The Middle School project is seeking LEED(tm) Platinum certification as a demonstration of Sidwell Friends' commitment to environmental stewardship through high-performance building design and operations. The landscape and building will co-exist within, and demonstrate, a broader network of systems. Human systems - our inter-relationships with resources - are embodied by the landscape and building as natural systems. The system itself, rather than a representation, is the ethic rendered aesthetic.

My husband is an architect that designs LEED certified hospitals/medical facilities and when I mentioned that the Obama girls were attending a Quaker School, he knew all about it. He kindly provided me with this link.

1. $20,000 per year tuition that school can afford anything.

2. They also serve all-organic meals to the children.
That gave me pause. Private schools for the ruling classes don't serve the polluted shit from China?

I don't begrudge any child a healthy diet. I just wonder why my grandchildren have no option in their public school but to eat the filth we import.

3. Your grandchildren have an option, as do mine who attend public school-pack an organic
lunch. My children are in 7th and 5th grades and have never even desired to buy. They pack (with re-usable containers) wholesome, healthy food including warm meals (thermos) on occasion.

4. Actually, they don't have that option.
Your children are lucky to have you. But you somewhat miss my point. :hi:

I wasn't merely talking about my own grandchildren. It was just a rhetorical device that was meant to include all the children in the world, not just my own. And to juxtapose and highlight the difference class and money make.

The op just really struck me, showing as it did the huge difference in the children of privilege and the rest of the world's children. I have heard the Bush twins also refer to the fact that they only eat organic meat and vegetables. The ruling class knows what we (poor and working people) are eating, and they refuse to eat the same thing, or feed it to their children.

Those of us fortunate enough to understand AND be able to afford it are certainly capable of making that choice. But that is not the case with my own grandchildren (actually my greats - the children of my granddaughter) because their mother refuses to accept anything I try to teach her about nutrition, or to even investigate it on her own. Plus, being a chronically underemployed and unemployed single mother, she couldn't afford it even if she wanted to. As is the case with most of the world's children.
