The only way Obama can comment on Gaza is WITH Bush next to him
It is utterly tragic what is going on in Gaza. Mind boggling... sickening...

However, because the Israel/Palestinian conflict is really a third rail issue where the fact that only one President is in power and has commander-in-chief powers, there has to be the perception that there is only one President at a time.

But I could see where Bush and Obama could do a press conference (perhaps with no questions) where Bush makes a statement regarding the tragedy and Obama is introduced as the President-Elect by Bush. Obama would be able to make a comment on the violence emphasizing that all sides are affected and that he will work toward helping bring peace to the region when he becomes President. Then Bush would conclude the event as President. It would be a formality where the World would see there is one President at a time and that there is a common statement coming from the White House.

Whether Bush has the kiwis to do this is another matter. It would be extremely important that Bush is still seen as the President.

2. More than "one President" the dual appearance elimates playing politics with this
The fact is that Obama and many Democrats have had no problem speaking on other foreign policy issues - both when running for President and as Senators or other officials. The reservation here is the fear that Obama showing the least criticism of Israel means it will be exploited by the Republicans.

While it is true that Obama can not propose anything that could be deemed separate negotiations, he can make statements.

4. That's what I'm thinking...
Would Bush want to do the correct thing if given the chance? He'd probably ask Obama to pardon him for life or some slimy deal... but it would be worth a try to have go in motion anyway.
