Stimulus showdown: trees vs. roads!

Democratic governors are slamming environmental advocates, in one of the first fights to break out within the Democratic party over the shape of the stimulus bill being fashioned by Congress and the new Obama administration.

The governors want money pumped into roads and bridges. Environmentalists say that just means more cars, and therefore more pollution, and want greener initiatives instead.

So environmentalists cheered when the transition team signaled that the bill would likely include $300 billion in tax cuts — depriving funds for projects on state transportation wish lists.

But the governors are starting to fight back.

2. Dems bashing Dems is about as Democratic as you can get.

It's one of the favorite pastimes here at DU and it all falls under the divine protection of "constructive criticism". To be a true Democrat you must not only have to practice constructive criticism, you must be ready to endure it like a hair shirt and smile as you wear it knowing that any criticism is done with love. The highest form of being a Democratic politician is when you are able to self flagelate after every decision and like it.

3. If the roads and bridges are falling apart then they need to be repared

And Obama wants tons of money poured into alternative fuels and a "smart grid"

I think this debate will work itself out, there are good people on both sides
