Would The Failure Of Holder As AG, Mean Obama Needs To Work With GOP For Supreme Court Nominees?
I have read that Republicans are using the Holder nomination as a test case for Obama's eventual nomination of a Supreme Court justice. This is why they are mobilizing to oppose Holder even though he is hardly the most liberal potential nominee. The idea is that if the GOP can oppose Holder's nomination, then it can force Obama to deal with them when it comes to time to nominate a Supreme Court justice.

So, it will be interesting to see how the Holder nomination pans out. My take is that if the GOP is successful in tanking Holder, then this spells trouble with respect to nominating a Supreme Court justice, and Obama will need to nominate a justice that does not inspire much opposition from the GOP to avoid a similar failure.

2. Why would it fail unless Dems forsake their party.
If Reid backs down because the repugs have 41 votes, I strongly suggest a march on Washington and Reid.
Let the repugs filibuster and let their foot-dragging be exposed. They will not be able to maintain a filibuster. It will do them more harm than good.

5. Right Wing/Corporate Grass Roots Opposition Is Generally Stronger Than Left Wing Support...
With Rove/Limbaugh/Fox the right wing can more easily mobilize opposition to Obama's picks, then the left wing can support them. For example, grass roots Democrats are not going to lift a finger to support Obama's pick of Holder or Obama's choice of a Supreme Court justice. Do you see a letter writing campaign? Do you see people calling radio stations? In contrast, the right wing/MSM is in full attack mode.

Compare this to Bush's choice of Alberto Gonzalez. The GOP and right wing supported Gonzalez with all of his warts, and the left wing could not mobilize opposition. Except for the actual 2008 election, the right wing/Rove generally have a better ground game than the Democrats. Obama won because he was able to mobilize a ground game, but before that, the GOP has had the better ground game. The Holder appointment will be example of the GOP's strong ground game, and the Democrats weak one.

3. Naaah. If Obama is smart, he'll ask for GOP input no matter what.
But the truth is, the "advise and consent" role falls to the Senate. If he can get the votes in the Senate, one of those "straight up or down votes" then he's good to go.

6. If the GOP blocks Holder, they can block absolutely anything. nt
