There are some Democrats here at DU complaining against the Congressional Democrats for complaining about Barack Obama's financial recovery plan.
To them I say:
The tree of liberty needs all three branches.
For eight long years it has had to make do with just the one.
I for one am tired of the George W. Bush approach of "my way or the highway".
I am tired of the "unitary executive" approach to governing this nation.
It has led our nation to the edge of the precipice.
America will be far better served by a free and open debate followed by a legitimate compromise that results in true consensus than it will be by simply adopting any single person's plan - including Barack Obama's.
The Founders were very very wise men and understood that the best policy is derived through legitimate debate and compromise arriving at a consensus. (Read Federalist #10 on Faction)
They intentionally gave us THREE branches of government that balanced and checked one another and two houses in Congress to further divide the power. We've unfortunately been missing that vital aspect of our government for far too long and it has led us to disaster.
I for one trust Barack Obama will be willing and able to achieve the majority of his plans while always respecting the Constitutional process both in letter and in spirit and will not attempt to stifle debate just so he can get the last 10% of his plan his way instead of someone else's.
I urge you to consider that we are not just here at DU to be Obama's cheerleaders but rather to urge what is best for the country. I believe Obama would be better served by this and that he would rather that we did so.
Above all I want a President who has an open mind, who will listen to others advice sincerely, and who has the humility to realize that he isn't always right and flexibility to change his mind when he encounters a better idea.
I believe that man is Barack Obama.
Sincerely,
Doug D.
