inauguration day. We've just suffered 8 years of hell, and I am going to damn well enjoy having a Democrat in the White House again. And yes, I am sure I wont love every one of his decisions, but that is life. I am confident Barack is going to bring all of this home once he actually is sitting in the Oval office.

For my GLBT friends, I look forward to talking about Barack again once he lifts DADT and allows open service for gays and lesbians.

14. I have more problems than that. But I think that Gupta's appointment is the craziest.
I can understand Rahm Emanuel and Clinton. Obama needs the tough guys on his side. I also understand that Howard Dean did his bit and is now done. I don't understand Obama not being appreciative of Dean and at least saying thanks. Rick Warren is a concern. So is Gupta. Why? There are a lot of way more qualified people. I have seen a lot of administrations come and go. Some are bad and some are worse. I am more than willing to give Obama a chance. And I do want to say that he inherited a huge mess. I will get excited when I see results. In the mean time, I will continue to fight for progressive issues. I think we progressives that demonstrated our collective power in electing Obama need to think ahead to the 2012 presidential and be ready to fight with or without Obama. Personally, my pick was Rep Kucinich then Edwards. But I worked hard for Obama and will hold him accountable for his actions.

Peace

83. I too am in wait and see mode
This guy I know was soooo convinced that Bush was gonna be a great president (i know, i know) that he ran around basically shouting his love of Bush from the rooftops. He even semi-reluctantly voted for Bush in 2004. Come 2007 he was not only apologizing to everyone he knew for voting for Bush, he changed his registration from repub to independent and did not vote for McCain in 2008. Like you, the Gupta pick, the Rick Warren BS, and other decisions made by Obama so far have definitely chilled my enthusiasm quite a bit. Of course he was better than McCain, but I will take a lesson from my ex-repub buddy and not set myself up for too hard of a fall. I'm extremely glad that Bush is gone. But will Obama be more than a republican-lite dem? I hope so, but only time will tell.

My trust in Obama, from the beginning, has never been misplaced. He has shown time and time again, that he has sound judgment.

He won, against incredible odds. I will give him the time he needs to get us to a better place---I know he will deliver! He has shown me he has the goods.

47. That attitude doesn't even make sense to me.
Edited on Sat Jan-10-09 07:51 AM by Political Heretic
Fired up, woo hoo, excited - that sort of make sense during a campaign.

But now, I'm settling down to business. Obama is human, not a god, and its up to me and the rest of us to demand accountability and action. That requires relentless criticality and skepticism.

I'm extremely grateful that Obama got elected, and I voted for him because I hope that he will be a great President. But now its time to get to work, and I am not a cheerleader. There are tremendous forces all seeking to bend Obama to their will - and the odds, frankly, are long on his ability to deftly maneuver through that minefield and truly bring meaningful, positive change.

My job is not to "spin" for the President, or find any and all ways to put a positive light on any and all decisions he makes. My job is to advocate. Advocate for what I believe to be in the best interests of we the people.

That doesn't mean that on January 19th, I won't be glued to my television, thrilled at a truly historic moment.

52. It's historic
The first black president, a man with many great new ideas especially in energy, education, and foreign affairs, at a minimum it's a wonderful break from the last 8 years even if Obama is sucking up to anti-gay,anti-women Christians, the Israeli right, and Reaganomics. And, I'm certain that progressives will have more of a voice with Obama than they had with Bush, even if Obama tries to ignore us.

but I do see him trying to bring warring factions to the table. I'm not thrilled about Pastor Warren but I wonder if that was a deal made by the candidates and Warren if he sponsored their 'civil forum.'

69. Only 143 recs after this long is pathetic.
Why am I not surprised.

Obama hasn't changed one position since the election, and yet so many are willing to give up on him already.

Y'all should be embarrassed.

... that while Obama's idea of what's best for America may clash with yours in some areas, at least he looks like he's going to take his job seriously and listen to the people's concerns. That alone is more than Fuhrer Fratboy ever did.

I can't wait. I'll be having a special toast for the inauguration.

Throw back a shot of cheap rotgut as a farewell to the Bush administration followed by a glass of my favorite adult beverage to welcome Obama, and wash the nasty taste out of my mouth.

What a historic day it will be.

117. Hell yeah
I'm taking off from work on Jan 20 and for the first time in a long time, I'm going to cry tears of joy, and tears of great sorrow simultaneously. I will cry for all those souls that have perished, and all those that have been traumatized, both physically and mentally by the hideous deeds of BushCo. I will also cry tears of fervent hope that better days for the world might lay ahead of us.

126. Too late for a rec but a double kick
:kick: :kick:

I'm easy. I was sold at competent and a general belief in government. People seem to have quickly forgotten that as a missing factor in the Oval office for say at least 18 of the last 40 years.
I realize that things are so messed up now that even Nixon would be an improvement over most anyone else that has served in my time, except for Bubba. That's not all I hope for or want but competence ain't nothing to sneeze at. Actually, caring anything for the common citizen is super. Put them together and you've earned an automatic C- from me.

127. I am EXTREMELY excited
I don't expect perfection from him or his administration, but I absolutely trust that, after eight long years, the government will once again be on the side of the people, acting (or honestly doing their best to act) in our best interests.

In a country like America, on a planet like Earth, there's no way he can please all the people all the time, and it'd be a huge waste of energy for him to even try. I believe that Obama will always try his hardest to aim for the greatest good for the greatest number, not that he will save the world from all its ills. I'll be disappointed in his decisions sometimes and thrilled sometimes. It's going to be a whole lot better than the 99% disappointment rate (Bush's increasing aid to Africa is the one thing I can think of that wasn't evil) of the past eight years.

So--long answer short--I am hella excited. I plan to spend Inauguration Day sobbing tears of joy like a baby with whatever makes babies super happy.
