Going to the Inauguration - know what you can and cannot take
http://inaugural.senate.gov/2009/keytopics.cfm#prohibited

Firearms and ammunition (either real or simulated)
Explosives of any kind (including fireworks)
Knives, blades, or sharp objects (of any length)
Mace and/or pepper spray
Sticks or poles
Pocket or hand tools, such as “Leatherman”
Packages
Backpacks
Large bags
Duffel bags
Suitcases
Thermoses
Coolers
Strollers
Umbrellas
Laser pointers
Signs
Posters
Animals (other than service animals)
Alcoholic beverages
Other items that may pose a threat to the security of the event as determined by and at the discretion of the security screeners

I'm glad I read the list, I was going to use this vintage Coach back pack purse but clearly it would get banned with this list. I'll have to find something else that can pass the muster with going to the event.

3. So babies can't go? No strollers or diaper bags? ( Large bags?)
Personally, I think it would be too cold anyway but I wonder are there provisions for babies? ie diaper bags at least? I wonder how security actually handles that?

4. Well I'm sure a small diaper bag would be allowed but why take an infant
Personally I'd be pissed if I had to listen to a screaming baby during the inauguration.

As for strollers - well the place will be backed and strollers can only cause more havoc.

10. Some folks like to take their children as "witnessess to history". I have
seen many pictures of people with babies at previous inaugerations( Along the parade route and in the crowd! )

11. Previous Inaugurations probably haven't been this size
the parade route is a different story but within the ticketed inauguration area it makes total sense. And I can appreciate someone wanting to take a young child to witness history but an infant isn't going to recognize what is happening so why annoy those around you with a child that may end up making a fuss and disturbing those around him/her.

5. There's no way they'll keep backpacks out of there...
There's also no way they'll keep large bags or thermoses outta there. I doubt there'll even be enough police to monitor everything.

6. Lynne, if people are on the Mall without tickets these don't apply
These restictions only apply to those inside the security area at the Capitol. Above 4th St in the ticketed area.

Strollers, chairs, backpacks, etc. are allowed in the general are on the Mall.

8. But previous years you still have to go thru security to get on the parade route
we did for the Bush parade. Then again it was more apt to have people protesting then cheering him on.
