Why is a NYTimes reporter already dismissing Obama as a one-term president?
He has not yet been inaugurated and they are already predicting what will happen in the next few years both in the economy and with Obama's agenda.

Of course, the media have problems changing the way they work, and continue working to destroy Democrats, as they have always done.

White House reporters for The New York Times predict that the market collapse will force President-elect Barack Obama to abandon for now many of his campaign promises.

If his stimulus plan "doesn’t work out, he may very well be a one-term president,” said Jeff Zeleny, who covered Obama’s campaign. “It’s hard to imagine that he could be reelected if the economy’s in the exact same position four years from now.”

2. An "if...then" phrase is now "dismissing as a one-term president"???

Not everyone is a magical thinker.

Many of us use logical structures like "IF Obama eats ten pounds of twinkies a day, THEN he will get fat" without it being a prediction or voodoo hex.

19. Reading has been replaced with being paranoid that someone may be violating the secret
speech code adapted and enforced by all the 'real' supporters of Obama.

3. The media is good at underestimating Presidents.
How many times did the media underestimate Obama during the presidential race? They were ready to write him off in October of 2007.

10. unfortunately true, if things don't improve in the next four years Obama won't be re-elected
unless the GOP is incredibly stupid and nominates Sarah Palin, then he would have a chance--even with a bad economy. But my guess is that we will see improvement in the next four years (perhaps not in time for the '10 congressional elections, but by the '12 presidential election).

14. I think that very well may be true.
It's not Obama's mess, but if he can't improve things he will be out. I'm not sure if this is fair and I'm not entirely convinced Obama CAN single-handedly pick this mess up in 4 years, especially not with his stable of Chicago School neolibs, but regardless I think voters are not going to be very patient. I think barring a miracle, anyone would be looking at one term. Jury's still out, and I'm waiting, but the man is a politician, not a magician...

18. One does not enter the presidency with greatness but rather with great challenges.....

....greatness in the presidency, or anywhere else, is achieved by how an individual meets the greatest challenges of the office.

(Kinda paraphrased from Adm. Bull Halsey - WWII great military hero). "There are no great men. There are ordinary men who achieve greatness by resolving the great challenges they face."

I know, I know - that goes for women also. And there have been many great women.

20. we are facing a Depression
Compared to that, these petty partisan concerns and team loyalty are of no concern.

The people have thoroughly and utterly rejected the religious right and Reaganomics. The Democrats have a mandate, are now in power. They now move forward on behalf of the people and move forward with withe left wing programs based on the traditional principles and ideals of the Democratic party and organized Labor, or they will be unable to respond to the growing Depression. Should they play political games, with an eye on the next election, and compromise with and pander to the right wingers, that will result in terrible suffering for the people. In that eventuality, the public may well reject the Democrats, and they should.

The time for centrism, for playing footsie with the right wing, for jockeying for partisan advantage, for caving and compromising, for fearing backlash, for preening of images, posturing and selling of products, for triangulating and pandering is long, long past.

There is no easy way out of this crisis, and people who keep looking for one are in for a rude awakening.

Fight or die.

The whole point of "winning" is for the purpose of gaining the power to do the things that give the people desperately need. The people ant us to fight, fight for them, they don't care about the fortunes of the party nor the politicians and partisans within the party.

Should the Democrats continue to play games with the right wingers, and fail to fight for the people for fear of losing the next election, they will fail and will lose offices. They should lose under those circumstances.

What matters is the suffering of the people, not the fortunes of the Democratic party politicians. Relieving the suffering of the people is the reason we have a party, the reason we try to win elections.

22. I don't read it that way
Zelney said,“It’s hard to imagine that he could be reelected if the economy’s in the exact same position four years from now.” and if the economy is not showing signs of turning around it will be as Zelney says. This economic downturn and hopeful rebound will be a referendum on our party. We are in control and if we can't fix it - well I don't even want to go there.

24. FDR won overwhelmingly in 1936.
IIRC, the depression was still in full effect. I think it all has to do with perception of who is at fault, and what they are doing to address the problem. Of course, the R's will try to hang the economy around his neck, and they will probably try to create crises to make his life difficult (remember Enron, Gray Davis and the California blackouts?)

27. As a nation we don't have the attention span we did in FDR's time
Its going to suck in nearly any realistic event. Most aren't capable or willing to accept that there are huge problems that actually might take time and sacrifice to fix. It is my thought that the President-elect needs all the support that we can stomach to give him or its plausible that we'll go right back to the Republiscum ruination of our country.
