See, this is what I don't get. He has just said that he will order it closed in the first week. We don't know how long it will take. Yet you assume it will take too long for it to be acceptable. And this post implies you believe he has abused his position.

B) dealing with the prisoners of Guantanamo is like dealing with the closing of your run of the mill military jail.

It is possible that it might happen that quickly. One thing I can tell you, having much experience in military intelligence, is that there are logistical issues that only a few people on this board are aware of, which dictate caution.

The first order of business will be to END Bush administration ill-treatment of the detainees and absolutely insure that their treatment meets Geneva Convention guidelines. We can't go wrong as long as those standards are met.

BEFORE everything is shut down, the prisoners need to be interviewed about their treatment. That should be done while the current staff is there, but by investigators who have had no involvement with current staff or prisoners. There might be physical evidence at the site which needs to be protected. In addition, some of the detainees might need to lead investigators to various parts of the facility so they can say exactly what happened to them in each area, assuming they were able to see where they were, and that torture did in fact occur. I'm of the opinion that it did, but I don't necessarily hold out hope that the prisoners will be able to provide much more than personal accounts.

By the time Obama is inaugurated, everything might have been cleaned up, all the documenation might have been shredded, and there might be nothing whatever to see. The point is that you don't know and I don't know the complications and possibilities that exist. Therefore, neither you nor I can possibly estimate a time frame. The best case scenario is that Gates is already on board and has begun doing what he can to plan for the closing, thus speeding up the process.

In the main, you are probably right.

Each detainee needs to be assigned counsel, and some sort of settlements are going to need to be worked out with a lot of them.

Because of return issues, I could see some of them getting appropriate psychological therapy and getting resettlement aid or going into the Witness Protection Program or something modeled after it.

This is a very serious subject, and this is potentially very good news.

I think it is completely inappropriate that some here are using this as an excuse to taunt and bait other DUers. Those calling for the closing of the base would be happy, would they not, and justified were it to be closed, they would not be invalidated and wrong, and for all we know the critics will be the ones who lead the Obama team to make decisions like this. That is how politics works in a representative democracy, after all.

The false and malicious theme we are hearing from too many here - that critics seek to harm Obama and are not sincere, and would actually be disappointed or somehow defeated or proved to be wrong were the Obama administration to do some of the things we have been talking about can now be seen for what it is. It is merely an excuse for beating up on Democrats who happen to have a different opinion then the taunters.

If Obama closes down the detention center, that is a good thing and a validation of those who have been calling for him to do that. It does not validate those who relentlessly beat up on critics who were calling for that.

There is another inconsistency here. Why was it not OK for people to express certain opinions - because Obama and yet to take office and it was too soon - but it is not too early to express other opinions? If Obama has not yet taken office, and therefore we cannot judge anything he says pr does, then why are some of the same people who have been saying that not applying the same standard now on this issue?

I think it is shameful that some here are using this issue of detentions as a pretext for sneering at and taunting their fellow Democrats. Clearly the us versus them partisanship is more important to them then this issue is, and that is very sad.
